No. I don’t trust this govt to get it right, and particularly Dido Harding (who ran TalkTalk when they had 3 massive security breaches in a year). The minute I load the app I expect my bank and CC details to be harvested and sent to a Nigerian prince. They are all fucking incompetent and I also refuse to be forced to self isolate on the app’s say so - I’ll decide whether it is necessary, thank you very much.

According to the news on BBC it is only a legal requirement to self isolate if you are spoken to in person by someone from track and trace, the APP is only a recommendation.

I'm already using it. On my 'real' phone. From what I can see it's a well thought out App with useful functionality.

Whether it actually works well in the real world, with the Bluetooth proximity thingy remains to be seen. But what is clear is that the more people download it, the more meaningful and useful it will be.

That story’s been updated since I read it earlier - it was originally going to be mandatory if the app told you. It just shows the complete lack of thought and planning which has gone into this.

From memory, I'm fairly sure the govt had already said some time ago that the App would only recommend that you isolate in line with guidelines. That's my recollection.

If the BBC story said otherwise initially then I suspect they got that wrong and have now corrected the story.

According to the BBC, the Dept of Health had earlier said that users “must” obey the command to self isolate but that has now been countered by Hancock and other senior sources. It would not surprise me if the original plan was for it to be advisory, only for it to be changed on the whim of Hancock or Harding only for it to be changed at short notice again when they actually thought of the backlash. Nor would it be a surprise if the BBC have got their story wrong, either through accident or design. They’re as bad as each other.

I just got it.  I know I give up a little civil liberty.  And I don't trust the government that much.  But I am willing to put these things aside to do my part to beat this bloody virus. My own judgement call.

I downloaded early this morning. The T&T bit is good. Stops all the faffing around with bits of paper etc. Went to the library, council office and took a friend to a chiropody appt. All had the official QR bar code on display.
Be very interesting to see how the other functions pan out.

Is this the App to replace the world beating one we were promised about 6 months ago  :unknown:

Personally I don't put any of this shit on my phone and actually have the data turned off at the minute

Indeed, this is the world-equalling App  ;), developed in conjunction with Apple and Android and which many other countries already have I think? Although it's tweaked a little for each country's preferences presumably.

Yes, I downloaded this morning on my real phone.  I cannot see it causing me any punting problems but I will be careful.

I am assuming its a good thing until it proves otherwise.

Except some people leave their gadgets lying around, could pass one or be passed, but no contact with the owner. One tests positive. Do some workplaces involve staff leaving phones in lockers? Some people pop their phone in the locker at gyms, someone may come in they have no actual contact with.

In bold.
Totally agree fella.
If the govt and Dido Harding's department were really serious about getting the public on side to start using and utilizing these 'helpful' apps to assist with tracking and tracing where the virus is in the community, they'd have spent time and money making them compatible with most smartphones.
Don't you need at minimum Android 6.0 or above for this to even work. Why not make an app that will at least work satisfactorily with earlier bluetooth versions, and OS's.
Or are the fucktards expecting the public to spend extra money they haven't got to upgrade their smartphones especially?
You couldn't make it up.

Very good point well made Ms. Strawberry.
This is probably exactly the setup at warehouses and food processing factories up and down the country.

I agree that could be an issue for some.

I am trying to think of an instance where my phone has been anywhere except on my person or in my house. I dont go to gyms etc Workplace is at home. So low risk for me although time will tell.

Yes good points and i'd say many if not most manufacturing facilities have jewellery policies which include no mobile phones being allowed into production areas.

Does it work if it is turned off,if not they can turn it off in these instances.

Offline Gordon Bennett

Yes. I have it. Used at lunchtime too when I went into a Starbucks... I scanned the Qcode thing they had on the door. Seems like a reasonable way to track the spread but I'm sure half the populous will find reasons to carp about it. I already have Google Maps on my phone so The Man has been tracking and watching me for years anyway so I'm not gonna get worked up about NHS app spying on me.

I think these are all examples of people needing to engage their brains a bit.

It doesn't matter what the guidelines are or even this App, someone's situation somewhere will be a little out of the ordinary or different, in which case they'll have to do some thinking for themselves. Some people seem to need wet-nursing over this stuff and are keen to make a big noise over it all. I wish they'd shut up and get on with it .

You need to put your phone in a locker or you'll be away from it for some period of time? Perhaps turn the thing off.

Obviously, none of the above applies to your good self Strawberry  ;).

I think we all have to choose whether we would like to be part of the problem or part of the solution.  Claiming infringement of civil liberty or blind distrust of the app smacks of selfishness to my mind.  I'm sure all those thinking they'll decide when and if they isolate will have nothing but their civic duty in mind when that moment arrives.

Yep got it.

Track and trace at cafe's etc is great, really easy.

I am very happy to do my bit to help deal with the virus - this is a great example where each of us does something really easy and together than can be really powerful and effective.

Frankly I do not have much time for those who harp on with various crackpot theories for not doing it.

Yeah just put all the ideology behind us. Ignore the rhetoric and do anything we can to bring back a semblance of normality.

Listening to Radio 5 live whilst driving this morning, there was an interview with a techie expert. She was asked at one point if she had downloaded it herself and the reply was she couldn't as her iphone was too old and she hadn't got around to upgrading it!!

Techie expert? Perhaps she still has an Amstrad 386 desktop at home?  :D

It was mentioned that they should be switched off if put in storage and not 'on your person'. The algorithm combines distance from and time spent within range of the other phone to work out risk. All data is stored on the phone. Government has access to none of it as they wanted with the ill fated first version. In theory Google and Apple don't either. Will not operate on at least 20% of smartphones whose technology/operating system is not recent enough.

I cannot see the uptake being massive. The boat was missed with that opportunity with the government's first attempt.

This morning at 05:50 the closed version had been downloaded 80,000 times, 06:30 today it was two hundred thousand and just now it was 1.8 million for Android. It's harder to tell how many people are actually running it or with proper details.

The nhs scotland app, I enquired about, if I'm required to isolate for 14 days, if I get an alert, from the app.  Have now been told its a legal requirement, and you will have to isolate for 14 days

But all of this will depend on how long you are exposed, and how near you were to the infected person.  So for the nhs-scot, your required to be exposed for 15 mins, and distance wise 2 meter, if you meet these parameters, then you will be asked to isolate

If it was only guidance, and you went into work, and then a few days later, become ill with covid-19, there a big risk it will be past on to others

Offline Aldaman

So I downloaded the app. A month ago. As I was in the part of the east end of the trial.

Nothing unusual with my app. In fact it said my area was low risk. Even though in the news it was reported that cases was up.

Low and behold yesterday before the app was made public. It said my area was now medium risk.

The only time my app was tracking was when I was at home. And even them it was over night.

Did my time at trial bring anything new. ..
No and I’ve travelled around the uk. Plus uve been tested and what a surprise my test came back negative.

Offline robsmith149

Not using it because i don't go anywhere apart from supermarket and local shop, pointless anyway as only 18% of people with symptoms bother to self isolate, may as well scrap testing as well because what's the point of getting tested if you are going to carry on as normal anyway.

You could always volunteer to be one of the people doing it right? And then the people doing it right might outnumber the people doing it wrong  :unknown:.

Otherwise, no one will bother to download it because no-one else is. And then it'll all just be a complete waste of time.
