Boris (plus hangers on), Trump, Putin etc. will all be obvious and deserved fodder but first time around I found their celebrity asides and skewering of stuff we take for granted commercially more amusing.

It's about time Spitting Image returned, so many characters to play on.  :yahoo:

Unfortunately it will be on BritBox. Will have to see if I can get it by other means...

Great song/video.

Funny enough, there was a pub called the Essex Arms, (it wasn't in Essex though), and it was owned by some proper faces!   :scare:

It was a brilliant idea, brilliantly executed but it got tired and you have to remember it was crap by the end. Things have moved on as have the politicians. The current bunch of xxxxxx would feel no shame at however they were portrayed anyway.

It was of its day, by the end is was not funny.

Offline paper7

Youll probably find that it will be a pale shadow of its former self. The PC brigade will complain long and loud that it's 'racist', 'sexist' and every other 'ist' and 'ism' that you can think of. It would not surprise me if there is a sad person somewhere sat in front of a bank of TVs, tuned into multiple channels, watching and waiting for something half decent to complain about.

Offline MilleMiglia

The program was tame compared to the book - that wouldn't see the light of day in the current climate.

Offline willie loman

its the ,marx brothers syndrome, funny at the time, the thick of it, now that would be funny.

This. Also the original read like a whose who of 90s comedians in terms of writers and actors.

Sorry, what is this show? I googled it but still don't really get it. Is it like south park?

Glad to see the return of Spitting Image.

There's always a place for cutting satire, and no better time than now.

But they need good scripts, and good puppets. And they need to not be worried about who they offend. I suspect the last of those three may not happen, but the first two would suffice.

I wish them luck, although it's behind a paywall  :dash:

Offline mr.bluesky

I wonder if they will have the same people supplying the voices. I know Kate Robbins ( Emily Atacks mum) and Chris Barrie (Rimmer from Red Dwarf used to supply a lot of the voice overs.

I  hope that they rip the shit out of Harry lecturing us from Meagain's $14.1 million mansion in Canada.  A 30 something that's hardly had a real job in his life lecturing us is beyond parody. Very rich and privileged/famous people seem to think that they have a right to lecture everyone else. Lily Allen and Gary Lineker spring to mind.

Seen photos in the paper of some of the puppets and Harry and Megan's are included so there's a good chance.

It could be great if the producers hold their nerve. There's enough material at the minute.... That old Wilf Brambles puppet may yet have some use :hi:

I'm sure it will be on a Freeview channel soon enough. The only purpose for Britbox is to milk ex-pats, surely. Who in the UK would subscribe?  :unknown:

I think they'll have a few UK-based greysurfer-types, so long as there's enough content which isn't available on existing Catch Up services (like BBC iPlayer) to warrant it.

And also new content not available elsewhere, like this new Spitting Image stuff. They'll hope to gradually build up a portfolio of such. It'll be interesting to see how well they do - they basically need to offer stuff which people want to watch and which isn't available elsewhere. Also what'll be nice for older people, is to see stuff which isn't full of American accents, which is what you tend to get on Netflix and Prime. Yes, both of those make a small effort to use British actors, but they'll tend to be in subsidiary roles and often playing the US stereotype of being an idiot/a 'Butler' role/ineffectual/villain. They do make UK-originated stuff as well, but very little in the scheme of things.

I think you're right about the ex-Pats being a large part of the customer base, but I'd be interested to look at their subscriber demographic after a year or two...assuming they last that long.

I doubt it original cast had Steve Coogan, Harry Enfield, Alister MacGowan, john Thompson to name a few. Stewart Lee and Richard Herring provided a few sketches and I think Paul Whitehouse did.

It'll be just another vehicle to bait and ridicule people of white origin, especially men.

They do seem to have a puppet of Kanye West, although technically he's mentally ill, so maybe they'll pull it?

Will they be able to lampoon any black people or women? Are white mimics allowed to do the voice of a black person or would that count as "blackface"? Reckon they'll just have to do middle-aged or middle-classed white men, anything else will cause ructions.

1. Probably not. Which is a shame, no-one should be immune from being a target of satire, that's the whole point.

2. Probably not. Which is a shame because I thought we lived in a meritocracy?

3. Probably so. Which actually, is inherently racist.

1-3. With my cynical hat on. But I hope I'm wrong.

Citizen Khan too. Excellent stuff IMO. Mrs Brown's Boys is a crock of shit. There's so few good Sitcoms around these days.

Is it because we've become too snowflakey, basically, too fucking sensitive?  :unknown:

If it did go onto mainsteam TV it probably be 5 minutes before some soft cunt whingeing about some offence being caused.
And I can't imagine that horrible twat Cummings taking kindly to the piss being ripped out of him and Boris..

I could legitimately imagine the Machiavellian fucker putting pressure behind the scenes to have stuff dropped.

think as long as its balanced everyone can enjoy it. there's plenty of characters in all of the political spectrum. If they can just do Nicola Sturgeon's puppet dressed like Jimmy Krankie....

I think it would be a great mistake.  My abiding memory of Spitting Image is of Mrs. Thatcher and President Reagan in the backseat of an open topped and crowded car bouncing along to the chorus of "Ya do run Ron" - I think it was shortly after the Falklands War.

Times and circumstances have changed considerably, and I don`t think that the spirit of the program as it was then could ever quite be caught again with present day politicians (except possibly Trump, and he won`t be there long enough anyway).

My brother had taped a fair few of them in the 80s and had a VHS tape of the "best bits" he'd made, one which sticks in my mind was the 'Big Busters' skit which had actual topless women in it to make its point.

Sadly no sketch on YouTube but someone has uploaded the song from it: External Link/Members Only

If anything I imagine he would allow the "soft" targets (e.g. Barnard castle) to give a false impression of being "allowed" to criticise him, but shut down mention of other things, like him giving hundreds of millions in untendered government contracts to his mates, or the fact that he spent years in Russia working for an "airline" that had no planes and no pilots...

Offline winkywanky

Do we actually think the makers of Spitting Image would allow the govt to edit the script? In any case, all of this stuff is already in the public domain.

I tend to be quite cynical, but this isn't Russia or China, where you wake up dead after criticising the govt, or get given a Novichok sandwich or a cup of Polonium tea :unknown:.

True!

But a Spitting Image writer/producer? Kelly knew lots of stuff, I guess it's not totally beyond the realms of possibility, but a satirical programme taking the piss out of the govt? Nah.

I feel like they've missed the boat on bringing Spitting Image back. Although Boris Johnson will provide plenty of mileage it would have been far more funny when Jeremy Corbyn and Theresa May where the party leaders. It's also quite possible that Donald Trump will be yesterday's President in a few months.
