Melania and Ghislaine
What struck me most forcefully about Melania Trump’s statement yesterday was how little reference she made to her husband. It was almost as if the task of rebutting POTUS’s links with Jeffrey Epstein was too onerous to attempt.
Meanwhile, there’s the small matter of the e-mail exchange between Melania and Ghislaine Maxwell on 23 October 2002.
Melania: “Dear G! How are you? Nice story about JE in NY mag. You look great on the picture. I know you are very busy flying all over the world. How was Palm Beach? I cannot wait to go down. Give me a call when you are back in NY. Have a great time! Love, Melania"
Maxwell: "Sweet pea - thanks for your message. Actually plans changed again and I am now on my way back to NY. I leave again on Fri so I still do not think I have time to see you sadly. I will try and call though."
Yesterday Melania said this: "My e-mail reply to Maxwell cannot be categorised as anything more than casual correspondence. My polite reply to her e-mail doesn't amount to anything more than a note.”
My own cache of “casual correspondence” (not yet accessed by the FBI) doesn’t read quite like Melania’s and Ghislaine’s exchange; and indeed "sweet pea" isn't in my phrasebook. But, to be fair, I don’t move much in billionaire circles.
