Thanks for the info, but still not really any clearer why old men call woman crumpet.
Define 'old man' I don't and never have called women 'crumpet'.

I was asking about crumpet due to the title of this thread, and since it’s about woman in the 1960s & 1970s I assumed the word crumpet was in common use then. I have never heard a woman describe as crumpet before, that is why I was asking.
As per the age I would presume men of retirement age would be sexually active in the 1960s and 1979s, so old men would be men 65 upwards.

Well I fit that profile but to be honest it's more a term I've heard used in the likes of Carry On movies, than used myself. I know it is meant to refer to fit women but why I don't know, perhaps it's a local dialect thing.   :unknown:

Offline B4bcock

The expression is derived from the slang use of the term "crumpet " to refer to a woman who is regarded as an object of sexual desire. Crumpet in this sense is a rhyming shortening of the phrase 'cheeky strumpet', a strumpet being a lady of the night: Origin: From Middle English strumpet, strompet, strumpett.

Where does the British term “a nice bit of crumpet” come from? - Quora

I don't know how accurate this is, could be total bollocks.   However, I do remember the term 'crumpet' being used reularly in the South West in the 1960's/70's in reference to attractive, sexy young women.

Didn't Kenneth Williams play Professor Crump in Carry On Behind. That must be a play on the sexual connation of the word crumpet.

I think referring to women as "crumpet" is more of a class thing than anything else.  A quaint term like "rumpy pumpy".

As the person who started this thread, I admit that I am a man of a certain age. However, I don't use the term usually. I used it in the title of the thread with the intention of it including women who might have been termed "crumpet" in the 60's and 70's.

I am wondering however, if I should start a "Totty of the 1980's thread" if for no other reason than to spark some more etymological and semantic posts.  :D

Totty seems to me more something used for civvies in general eg. "No totty in tonight, is there?"

Ms James would be a reasonable start, though she never really did it for me - a 7/10 at best. I'd probably start with Sam Fox instead.

I've been a bit remiss not adding her yet, although I think true crumpet has to have a bit of a tacky "up for it" element and she was possibly just too classy. But what a beauty in her day...

Does Sam Fox not bat for the other side?

Additionally, I read a contemporary account of D- Day and the weeks after it; in one section, the British troops having liberated a small French town had a little bit of free time, and one of them said he was "off seeking some crumpet". When a member of the French resistance asked "what is crumpet?" the squaddie  'described a curved shape in the air with his hands, while making a loud sucking noise'.

"ahhh, Crumpet!" said the Frenchman, who gave directions to the brothels.

So "crumpet" as been around well before the swinging 60s!

She does.  I recently read some of her record reviews for Smash Hits/Just Seventeen or something and they were priceless, especially her views on on Morrissey.

A uni coursemate reckoned in his youth his parents had forced him to participate in their activities at an evangelical church, which involved a certain amount of god-bothering door to door on housing estates.  He said he was taught some fairly 'unorthodox' opening lines, including one about Sam Fox, as she'd recently become a born again Christian.  So basically he had to ask the bloke who opened the door if he liked busty page 3 girls like Sam Fox and if the reply was yes then he'd point out that she'd become a Christian and therefore he should consider becoming one as well.

I have to admit if some bloke knocked at my door and said "Do you like women with big tits?" I'd probably shit myself :sarcastic:

We used to go to the same Notting Hill doctor in the '60's. She was quiet and charming. I was going there because my partner at the time, a 17 year old Polish stripper had given me a dose. I'm pretty sure he (the doctor) fucked her - the stripper - at some point.

So no" cold war" (NATO vs Warsaw Pact) as far as the good doctor was concerned!!!

Thinking back, I once saw her naked on stage, in a touring production of "Abelard and Heloise" with Keith Michell as the male lead. At one point, they both walk on stage, from opposite wings, completely nude, meet in the centre and lay down, supposedly for a shag, but at that point the lights go off.

So, the reviewer went to a piece of theatrical art simply hoping to see big tits? What a twat. Even worse, he displayed a lamentable lack of knowledge of ecclesiastical architecture.

East End gal, family of market traders.  Went for the usual Anna Scher route for showbiz and flatlined were it not for the red tops coming calling after a spell of teen lingerie modelling.  Right time, right place.

All too easy to imagine her ending up as either a pub landlord's wife (regulars catching an eyeful), secondhand car garage bloke's missus or a West Ham player's WAG, if she was lucky, without that on hand.

Including some Aussie guy who got done for fraud for selling dodgy slimming tea If  I remember correctly.  Around about this time she must have developed a taste for pussy rather than cock. Was later married to her female manager who later died of cancer so now she's shacked up with another woman. Watched a recent documentary about page 3 girls. Strange how they all claimed to be exploited (not enough mind to stop them cashing the big fat cheques they were paid for getting their tits out)

A very erotic and suggestive film scene, without being crude etc.
One of my favourite films of all time. Loved Steve McQueen in his glider and also thundering through the sand dunes and along the beach in his er, Beach Buggy.
I still maintain that Steve McQueen is the very epitome of cool.
