Author Topic: What was found INSIDE Colston's statue.  (Read 1605 times)

This will probably only ring bells with my fellow-'silver punters', but apparently a contemporary copy of Tit Bits was found, hidden inside the statue when it was fished out of the docks in Bristol.

That reawakened memories of Tit Bits and Reveille, both of which I recall as incredibly soft-core  black and white newspaper-style magazines - but still disapproved of by my parents! - in the mid and late-1950s before I graduated to Parade, which 'lived' under my mattress and was the subject of my first real wankathons in the early 1960s. Tit Bits and Reveille had, I seem to remember, photos of the likes of Sabrina - remember her?! - bulging out of her bikini.

Any other owd beggars on here recall any of these magazines?

Yes. Showing my age now but I remember Titbits and Parade magazine.  I think when Titbits was first published it was like OK magazine . It then went out of publication and then returned as a soft porn magazine. I also seem to recall a magazine called Continental film review back in the late 70's or early 80's all about foreign films of the titillating variety.  Full of black and white photos of usually busty soft porn actresses

My memory is in the 1960s that both were more like human interest / news scandal sheets, with a smattering of TV soap news (mainly Crossroads and Corrie).
Quite common for builders to put DIY time capsules in buildings - drop a newspaper into a wall cavity, a penny into the damp proof course, even a biscuit tin with a paper inside into the foundations.
Dates back hundreds of years as a practice, back to the days of witch bottles, and walling up live cats to protect against evil spells

Anyone remember Health and Efficiency magazine?    Purportedly about keeping fit and well being, but all the photos were taken in nudist camps showing young birds playing tennis or throwing balls to each other.  Great wank fodder for a lusty young lad.  Innocent days back then, none of the in yer face, high def porn like today.

Personally no, but James Whale used to mention it on his talk show, a fair while ago now.   :D

Thought the statue was over 100 years old so some Victorian "Gentleman's Relish"  ;) would perhaps be more fitting but I guess the statue had gone in for a refurb at some point and someone thought "I know"

Shame they didn't know what was going to happen all those years later as they could have put some Bondage mag in instead

Yeah sorry I didn't read the article before posting and wrongly assumed it was from the 60's or something

Thanks, Scutty.   Looks like the format is virtually unchanged over all the years.   Except, of course, the grubby copies we exchanged at school contained grainy black and white photos, unlike today's HD colour ones.

Pretty sure I read somewhere when Sunderland's stadium of light was being built some builder who was a Newcastle utd fan buried a Newcastle shirt in the foundations to act as a curse on the club. It seems to have worked. :D

Just seeing a picture of Bridget Bardot in my Film Annual book would nearly burst my kecks

Reveille was often passed along the back row of the science classroom, but the best pages always seemed to be stuck together.

I remember H & E of course,  and also the early 'Adult' naturist films on the cinema with the strategically positioned towels, beach balls or tennis rackets etc...... Hilarious!

Can clearly remember this version of her video that was shown on Top of the Pops getting a mention on Points Of View cause her bikini didn't hide her assests that well. The following week the video was edited far too much and Sabrina's b( .Y. )bs were less on show

I'm sure I remember a scene in that film, Phoenix; 'Naked as nature intended' with the cast playing volleyball; yeah, right! ;)
It was shown at the Tivoli cinema - bet that's not still going - in Blackpool in 1961 or '62 and a whole crowd of us 15 year-olds from school trying to look 18, never realising that all the cinema management were only interested in the colour of our money  - a bit like SPs, then!! ;)

And Vicky Kennedy!!!!!!  :P :P :P  God; I wanked myself silly over her! What a pair of tits she had!! She was a model and then, under the name Margaret Nolan, acted in films such as Goldfinger and a few of the Carry on films.

She's still alive, aged 76, btw. I probably would ;) if only to say thanks for the mammaries! ;)  :D :D

Not sure that's the original Sabrina; she, like me, was a 'Sandgrown un' - born in Blackpool and was blonde. "Bottle blonde", said my Mum, dismissively!

He was an equal opportunity shit; slaves of both sexes died. He never married. He was very religious (ha!). I am a collateral descendant - i.e. from his brother. The idea of the statue was not popular even at the time. The man who masterminded and  arranged it had great trouble raising the money even from clubs that at the time were linked in name to Colston.

Interesting context Colston, thanks.

Do you know when it was erected? How long after his death?

the paper was dated 1895 and would almost certainly have been contemporaneous - unless the statue was remounted and the paper inserted then. Wiki says he died in 1721

Victorian then.

Interesting that there was much controversy over its erection at the time.

My parents were extremely straight laced but back in the 80’s I found a stash of H&E magazines in their bedroom, well hidden in a wardrobe. Which when questioned they said a friend had given them to my parents, and they hadn’t wanted them. In which case why accept them and why not burn them or put them in the dustbin?

Since my parents seemed to hate each other and never ever have sex, it has always puzzled me. I remember well looking through them and being surprised that they were quite ‘racy’, but in a much softer league than my own stash of Mayfair, Penthouse, Playboy and any other ‘porno’ mags that would be found, dog-eared, with stuck pages and ragged, on my paper round. Such treasures and pleasures!

Here's a little mammory of the Sabrina H. A 's thinking of from the old daze, when tits were real and pointed straight out

How times have changed from the dumb blonde days. There's also another old black and white saucy video on YouTube of her getting ready for bed, but it won't link on here. :unknown:
