Just figured I would start this as it doesn't seem to have been discussed.

But during lockdown, has anyone started up something new? A new hobby, a new task, a new direction, a new anything?

Or maybe are planning on doing it as soon as the lockdown ends?

For me, when the lockdown ends. And this probably sounds insane. But I thought I would try - once - as in I likely won't ever want to do it again after the first time. But swimming in the sea, as in at the beach - i.e. Tynemouth long sands beach for those in the area.

Its one of those things of, it would be good to try at least once in your life. Then however I read a guide on it and it made it sound like if you do it you run a good risk of never coming back out of that the water alive and would end up pulled out to the Netherlands. So am not so sure. But that is mine.

I got the idea after watching a documentary on this is how Sean Connery got in such good shape to play James Bond. This is what he did/does. So incase people think what made anyone come up with this idea.

I have also been watching on Youtube given I got it all now setup in my back garden for boxing to try learning Muay Thai. That one is more plausible.

But anyone else start-up something eccentric due to the lockdown?

I decided to get fitter (to get fit would have been too much of a leap) and have been out on my bike pretty much every day since lockdown started. I am really enjoying it, both the positive impact on my health and just the pleasure of travelling around like that.  You get in a zone and your mind drifts - until some fit git in lycra comes zooming past making some condescending comment like "keep going".

I have already seen significant progress in the distance I can cover, the hills I can now cycle up and the speed at which I complete routes.

When lock down eases I am looking forward to going further afield and may even plan a few trips with overnight stays.

I am pleased that lockdown has given me the space to do this regularly enough to make a difference to my fitness and really get into it.

Nothing new as such, more developments and adaptations.

Going off in different tangents from hobbies already established.

There's a lake I still want to swim in on the list, but simply for the experience not fitness because it will take up too much time on a regular basis.

Ant if you get to grips with sea swimming, I would hedge a bet that you'll never want to get into a formal pool again.

That was my thoughts too. Especially during the Covid issues. Sea swimming seems much safer in that regard.

Just this whole you must spot and identify full, half rip currents, feeder currents, ribbing tides, half tides, slack tides, spilling waves dumping waves. And apparently, if you go in at the wrong one you are toast.

It's like all I wanted to do was swim in it for a bit of fun and to say to myself I have done it.

As I have explained before, don't punt due to attempting to keep a marriage going.

with all due respect, if you don't punt trying to save a marriage then what the hell are you doing on here?

Thinking more about the pussy I want to fuck rather than fucking it is my main hobby followed by porn, reading and posting on here and UKE, and having carnal relations with my better half.

And of course Golf, which I am back to playing, very badly whilst my son continues to improve, the little fucker.

Yes I dusted off my golf clubs and played my first round today in 2 years. My joints and muscles ache like a bastard right now.

Have you been attempting to keep a marriage going for 5 years?

Been working pretty much flat out, from home, which after 12 weeks or however long it’s been has become a real chore!
I’ve been reading more, bought a pushbike which I’ve been heading out on daily, learning ukulele, learning German (badly) and drinking some different beers to the usual (got into IPA which I previously thought was bogging).
I’ve been trying to limit exposure to the news, watch BBC news at 10 and that’s it. It’s the same shite daily and I get fed up of hearing it regurgitated umpteen times a day. Ignorance is bliss!

I’m also seriously thinking about going for some open water swimming. I was swimming twice a week pre lockdown & I’m missing it. I’m a pretty strong swimmer & would be sensible, what terrifies me is my already wee cock turning full on chode when I jump in the North Sea...

Offline pbrown355

Open water swimming can be done as an organised event in lots of different lakes. Usually organised by triathlon clubs which means safety boats, whistles and company. Some currently not running due to you know what, but some others about to restart.

I've always been interested in Ancient Egypt - been to Cairo, Luxor,Aswan etc many times - so I took an online course offered by Penn University in the USA. Quite dull lecturer (American of course, so he talks about "DIE-nasties" rather than our "DIN--asties") but he knows his subject. Passed the course, earned a pretty certificate for my efforts.

My retirement came not too long (in the grand scheme of things) before lock-down so I was already branching out so to speak.

I had already taken up gliding but that's on hold for the time being.

I've played Rock/Metal guitar for many years & still play in a band today (albeit with all our gigs this year now cancelled) so, one of the new things for me is to try learn classical guitar which requires much different skills to my more common electric noodlings.

Finding it difficult TBH - years of playing with absolutely no technique & bad / lazy habits, does not fit well with classical training.

I have learnt to play the harmonica

No new hobbies, but two new activities  - doing online learning courses,  and helping out a bit with Covid  (i.e. food delivery for old people).

In terms spending more time on old hobbies, this has mainly been watching movies  (never had a Netflix or Now TV subscription until lockdown).    And tennis which can be a great sex substitute. Well except that a tennis writs/elbow  may be a problem for essential tommy tanking.   Lucky I have a slight masochistic side  :D

AnthG, Strawberry is right once you swim in sea, lake, river you won't want to go back to pools where you're either constrained by lanes or people and have to put up with the chlorine. However, as you note you need to do your homework re the risk of rip tides/safety and also pollution. There are still some beaches where sewage is pumped in or industry discharges and rivers that are affected by farming run off. As a kid I would swim in the sea at Southend - not sure I would do that now. Against that swimming in clear water off the West coast of Ireland is a definite yes.!

"No, just going through the motions"

LOL

Reminds me of an interview I heard with someone from Surfers Against Sewage who was surfing in Weston super Mare and going through the stanchions. When asked if it was dangerous the response was "not as long as you keep your mouth closed if you fall in"!!

This is great to hear, honestly, the image I had for you in my head all these years was similar to Alec Guinness in The Bridge of the River Kwai or something and a conversation whilst you were in the cockpit at work would have been something like...We've cleared you for take-off early Flight 19.......I say Jolly Good show there Airtower. Well, I'm not so athletic; ;)  but, while trying to declutter, I've re-discovered both a stamp collection and one of football programmes and other sporting memorabilia, both started in teenage years.

My OH, wherever she is today, would applaud getting them organised. Or, preferably, thrown out.

So I'm doing the former. It was, after all, the same gene which led me to try to keep a record of all the girls I'd punted. That was a list which I couldn't keep up with. #kidinasweetshop

Well, actually, you're not too far off the truth there Anth - I was sent to elocution lessons by my parents, at an early age in the hope of joining the RAF as an officer.
So, in reality, I really do sound a lot like the major from Fawlty Towers  :D

I was sent to learn elocution at the age of 7-10 - desperate times, I hated it & was singled out for the way I talked.

ATC may not have been an option..............

Anyway, despite having a voice like Ballard Berkeley, the ruse paid off and Cranwell beckoned  :hi:
