I've recently been replaying Monkey Island 1 and 2 for a bit of nostalgia.
I actually played Monkey Island 2 first, back in the early 90s, at a PC-owning friends house (a rarity back then, and terrible for his street cred). Having been raised on console games, primarily platformers and action games, experiencing an adventure game with a deliberately slower pace, a focus on dialogue and humour, and set to sumptuous hand-drawn backgrounds and high-quality MIDI music, absolutely blew my mind. Monkey 1, which I played a few years later, was a marked visual downgrade but still oozing charm and wit, and in hindsight is probably my favourite.
Replaying both I mostly breezed through - once you know the solutions to the puzzles it's basically just a case of going through the motions, and anything that stumped me for more than 15 minutes was summarily Googled. Both massively enjoyable to revisit, with rose-tinted goggles positively screwed into place. I do wonder how the hell anyone was supposed to intuitively get some of the more cryptic puzzles, though.
