100% agree on Romesh. Seems to be appearing on tv nearly every time you switch it on. Also recently on "The weakest link" as presenter. Also add Jack Whitehall to the list.
Jack Whitehall I quite like as an actor, never found his stand up funny. Romesh doesn't annoy me, but I don't find him funny, he must have a good agent to appear in some grade a primetime TV like weakest link and travel man or whatever it was.

Regarding Jack Whitehall - anybody who has been balls deep in Gemma Chan deserves our upmost respect in fact he should be awarded a MBE for it!...

Agree neither him or Romesh are funny (not to me anyway!)

Guy Ritchie with his new movie The Gentlemen. Vastly over-rated IMO, his clever-clever gangsta talk and witty adding of alternate scenes can amuse only for so long. 1 hour 53 minutes of waiting for the action turns out to be no more than 1h 51 minutes of extended introduction and a two-minute punch-line that was hardly worth the effort.

Have you got a black & white TV, which you put 50p's into ?
Coz it was released in 2019  :D
Wrath of Man is GR's latest effort, which is pretty good, with Jason Statham leading

Thank you so much for the warning.  :D .

I haven’t seen any efforts of his yet that I liked so understandably I didn’t pay much attention to the release date (Netflix billed it as 2020), mea culpa, and I will look out for wrath of man so I can avoid it.

I don’t have a Time Machine unfortunately. If I did I could get back various wasted hours watching films I didn’t like by rewinding and doing something else. :D. Starting with episodes of the current incarnation of Dr Who for instance which I thought must get better and didn’t. Ahhhh that would be so nice.

I hear the next Golden Globes won’t be broadcast live. I can only guess that Mr Gervais, the one comedian that really boosted ratings has annoyed the shit out of them. That’s one comedian I quite like — though I personally think his stand-up is much better than his series.

Agreed, the Office, Extras, etc were just cringeworthy, worse than Frank Spencer.

The only reason to watch award ceremonies is to see the stars being ridiculed and having their pomposity pricked.  They seem to need a Brit to do it, as most Americans are either too deferential to success, or would dare risk their career.

Norm MacDonald did it, but he was Canadian. As did Don Rickles, but it was just a roast of Scorcese. Gervais gave it both barrels. Office I liked at the time, but wouldn't watch it again. Extras had some good bits especially with Les Dennis, but it has aged really badly worse so than Frank Spencer and The Young Ones.

Jimmy Carr. Just comes across as mr. Smug
Usually thought of him like that. But just watched one of his stand-up shows on Netflix. He piled so many one-liners into each minute that even the ones I didn’t laugh at I had to admire how he could remember so many. Is he on amphetamines? But I think I also liked the way he could, as a comedian, be anti-woke even now.

He's getting a lot of stick at the moment for a joke about gypsies in that Netflix show:

I don't see why. It's a joke FFS!

If anything I'd say it's actually educational. I had no idea so many gypsies were also killed by the Nazis.

He's no Rodney Dangerfield. Rodney told jokes really quickly because he didn't want to give the audience time to boo.

There's an outpouring of sympathy for gypsies on social media, bless
This will come to a grinding halt should they decide to park themselves anywhere near where you live
I know people who run shops near where gypsies have moved in & the theft rate sky rockets
They know its going to happen, more expensive stuff is removed from the shelves
And its better to pretend not to notice rather than provoke a confrontation
For a few days its batten down the hatches, double check locks on the motors & house & decide not to go out for an evening
Best not to open the door to them if they are offering to tarmac your drive or do anything else
They know that 99.9% of people will say no, however when its door open they are scoping your house
Must fit the ring video door bell, i've answered the door a couple of times  :dash: make up a bollox excuse and be apologetic & polite

JimmyC cant be that smart, alienating gypsies so publicly
You dont want to get on the wrong side of them

I had the jimmy car saved to watch some time. I figured I better watch it right away though as it’ll probably get taken down. He can be quite irritating but some of his one liners are proper funny. He styles the last 5 minutes as career enders - like really offensive jokes. To my mind though they are only at the level of fillers from an anthony jeselnik show. His eric clapton joke is the best bad taste joke ever imo

It smacks of self promotion. We get told how controversial Jimmy Carr, Seth MacFarlane or Frankie are, but notice those that are controversial never appear on TV anymore and rarely anything is written about them: Andrew Lawrence, Sadowitz, Chubby, Jim Davidson, etc.

The joke about the holocaust was indeed part of a full length show but filmed and offered on Netflix. Less political than Frankie Boyle…

Are you suggesting there is some group with some sort of vendetta against Netflix? Trawling through their catalogue looking for opportunities to claim controversy, and possibly get their shows cancelled?

Like the online moans about Dave Chappelle stand-up shows on Netflix being Anti-Trans?

As the streaming services like Netflix, Apple TV, amazon etc are not regulated by Ofcom in the same way as TV broadcasts there are no official bodies that can force them to remove or censor any content. They can self regulate, choosing to remove content, but that would only happen if they believe it is going to impact on the number of people subscribing.

It's just as likely the PR guys at Netflix feed these "controversial" stories to the press themselves. Drum up a bit of free advertising. Getting a few more people to watch the show 2 months after it was released, when the viewing numbers are probably starting to drop off.

Actually he explained unashamedly in one of his stand-ups how he fakes it and demonstrated it: by breathing in. Very useful technique — sounds more realistic than a forced laugh.

The audience laughed.

If an audience likes a comedian who gets on a run, they laugh at anything.

Interesting; I didn't know he fessed up about it. It's his annoying fake laugh that put me off him. I suppose the fake laugh is his trademark now.

You're right about some people becoming fanboys/girls and laughing at anything "their" comedian does. I find it it happens a lot with TV audiences.

Indeed. Though not just fanboys. Many a time I’ve been at a stand-up with a succession of comics. If the preceding one was crap, the audience becomes desperate to laugh at anything the next one says that’s remotely funny. One night, the guy behind the mike (an unknown) said, “I don’t have any jokes. I’m not really a comedian.” The audience howled with laughter.

This is the thing though that all stand up comedians will have died on stage at some point, perhaps it's a bad crowd or perhaps it's the wrong gags for that particular crowd or the place was almost empty so there was zero atmosphere.

Wind forward a few years though and suddenly people are shelling out £30 for a ticket to see some guy whose been on TV and the place is packed out, people will howl at the same gags that he fell flat on his face telling a few years before.

I saw some guy about 30 years ago, the place was packed but i'd heard all his gags multiple times for the last 5 years, he didn't have anything whatsoever new, people were rolling in the aisles but I thought he was shit

John Oliver.   Loves making digs at the Royal Family because it keeps him relevant.  He was not even asked about it on Seth Meyers but waded in to the discussion because he knew it was clickbait.  He is the type of comedian that starts laughing and hopes nobody will catch on to the fact that he hasn’t actually said anything funny.

I've not seen the TV versions of these shows, but I saw the 2 shows live (they are back to back, so just a proper long set with an interval). He absolutely takes some getting into but in my opinion very much worth it. Yes, there's repetition and stuff that flies over my head but he constructs an excellent show which all makes sense in the end. Not sure it will be in the TV versions as I think it would only work live, but there's a part in one of them where he 'realises' he has lost the audience. All confected of course but so hard to be sure while it is going on and we're taken on a wild, uncomfortable ride where you're really not sure what's going on.

In a past live show he saw someone take out a mobile and went absolutely ballistic and again it was impossible to tell whether this was part of the show, real, just a way to raise the energy in the room. It all worked. It wasn't a setup, but he was ready for it happening.

So, yeah, an acquired taste I will readily admit!

I didn't know who she was so looked her up.....

She seems to be the perfect example of a modern stand-up: an actress playing the part of a comedian, somebody performing a routine that was almost certainly "co-written" with others ie 95% not her own material.

I realise that stand-ups have always been "performers" but at least in old days they were witty, funny and creative in their own right. Today, they are stage school trained jobbing actors playing a the role of a comedian and a lack of authenticity usually comes across in their delivery.

I was looking at the British Comedy Awards on Channel 4, now called the National Comedy Awards. It's all a bit sad what it's become first host was Parkinson in 1990 with Jonathan Ross, Angus Deayton being josts; this year Tom Allen. The award for writing is now the Caroline Arherne award for writing it was some screen guild thing to begin with. She's wrote some great comedy, but I think Craig Cash was probably the catalyst behind Royle Family you can see how lame the gags are in the first series and also how good Cash's Early Doors was as evidence. Mrs Merton was shit and the Fast Show had way funnier people working on it.

The Victoria Wood lifetime achievement award? Why not Peter Cook or Pete & Dud lifetime achievement or Spike Milligan. Because they are male? Or some stuff doesn't fit with woke audiences?

Also missing is stuff like children's comedy program award.
