So, you have got to stay in for the best part of 3 weeks. However, you are only allowed just the 5 films. Food for thought - which 5 would you choose? I would go with:

The Graduate.
Rainman.
For a few dollars more.
Quadrophenia.
Kes.

(As a side issue, can anybody through any light as to why Kes hasn't been shown on television for many years?)

Yes,I'm very meek on this site, but I've always been a big film fan,and the more violence the better-Jason statham,Steven Segal films a particular favourite.
I enjoy most genres-but action, thriller and horror are my favourites.

Kes.

(As a side issue, can anybody through any light as to why Kes hasn't been shown on television for many years?)

A favourite film of mine.

Probably because as time goes on, it doesn't have the same appeal for so many?

But undoubtedly a Ken Loach classic, and it bloody well should be. The young lad was stunning. And I think I'm right in saying, as so often is the case with Loach, he got someone new who'd barely acted before, as the lead.

Because they're too busy showing The Hangover trilogy, Harry bleeding Potter & the trillions of Avengers movies ad nauseum probably  :dash:

It does get shown occasionally, normally at midnight on C4 .

Thanks. It was based on the book "A kestrel for a knave" which was part of the English syllabus in schools for many years. I've got it on DVD but by my reckoning it hasn't been on television for a good while (at least 8 years?). It may be that somebody (Ken Loach or one of the cast?) maybe doesn't want it shown for some reason or other? There was a documentary on BBC4 which Greg Davies did recently entitled "Looking for Kes" in which he spoke to some of the cast and visited some of the spots where it was filmed. That would have then been an ideal time to therefore show the actual film afterwards but sadly they didn't.

As an aside, I should have written throw any light rather than through any light on my original post. I should know by now that poor and incorrect English on the forum will never do!  :hi:

Another fave of mine was Akenfield. Never, ever gets shown now, and you can't find a DVD of it anywhere.

The soundtrack music by Michael Tippett is stunning, and goes with the Suffolk visuals perfectly.

Anal Destruction 3?
Really?
I felt, whilst still very moving, it was the weakest in the trilogy, with inferior story arc & character development compared to the first 2 classic installments & don't get me started on THAT ending!  :dash:
Still, Barry Norman loved it so what do I know?  :unknown:

Offline winkywanky

If I recall Barry Norman's review correctly, he complained of there being way too much lube, and the lighting was way too stark.

I think he had a point.

I wonder if you are maybe getting confused with The Godfather. Or should that be The Prodfather?

Some great choices there, after much deliberation I've gone for:

 Citizen Kane
Bicycle Thieves (sometimes known as The Bicycle Thief )
 Schindler's List
 Anal Destruction 1
Anal Destruction 2 (just couldn't separate these 2 cinematic masterpieces)

1. The Adventures of Robin Hood starring Errol Flynn & Olivia de Havilland - THE Robin Hood film - who can ever forget that sword fight between Flynn and Basil Rathbone - must have seen it a dozen times by the time I`d left school
2. Henry V (HAS to be the Laurence Olivier version) - The SWIIIISH when that flight of arrows is launched is hair raising
3. Citizen Kane  ( Orson Welles at his greatest, and brilliant acting from the whole cast)
4. Taming Of The Shrew - the Frank Zefferelli version, with Burton and Taylor (always a joy to watch them fighting)
5. Battle of Britain - I watch it again every time it comes around on TV and I still sometimes hear those sirens in the night.

Excellent choices Happylad. Olivier was our greatest actor, certainly in terms of interpreting Shakespearean roles, both on stage and screen. Burton should have been his natural successor, but largely wasted his talent by appearing in far too many mediocre films, "The Spy Who Came In From The Cold" was with your particular choice a notable exception.

Interesting choices, would like to see a few films again to see how I like them now. The hill, starring sean connery . Lots of mentions of Kes, enjoyed watching it, the bird of prey incidentally belonged to Captain Nairac, .

Enjoying re viewing all the great old war films of the 50's....there's plenty on 'Talking Pictures'
Still think the original Dunkirk 1958 was better than the latest one.

They've even been showing 'Old Mother Riley'  and George Formby films, which bring back childhood memories.

Was only reading recently that Formby's  'cleaning windows' song was banned by The BBC, referring to it as a disgusting little ditty.... How times change.

Godfather
Godfather 2
The good the bad and the ugly
Shawshank redemption
The warriors.

Offline joe diddley

The Warriors (post above) is a great film. Of course it's entirely comic strip and you can almost see the bubbles from the characters' mouths when they speak ("The chicks are packed!")

My list would include the following:

The Night of the Hunter (Robert Mitchum at the peak of his powers which went way beyond his usual type casting as tough army sergeant as the evil preacher with 'LOVE' and 'HATE' tattoo'd on his knuckles)

Bull Durham (Kevin Costner isn't a favorite of mine but he is excellent, along with Susan Sarondon, in this romantic comedy set in one of baseball's minor leagues. Said to be a favorite of Billy Wilder (who of course made Some Like It Hot).

The Big Lebowski (some great fucking dialogue and epic performances from Jeff Bridges and John Goodman, not to mention a hilarious cameo from John Turturro as 'Jesus' - "And that rug really held the room together, did it not?")

The Exiles (great footage of the now gone Bunker Hill neighbourhood in LA; the subject matter is a group of Native Americans off the Rez and their eventful lives as they socialise, drink, dance, gamble and brawl in the big city in the early 60s when it was made).

Zulu (perhaps the greatest war film ever made - I don't think it really needs any introduction from me here - saw it when it came out at the Kentish Town ABC cinema [now The Forum] when I was about 8 or 9 when screens were truly big - the next week the whole school was playing Zulu in the playground, a few playing the soldiers behind a little wall, the great majority, including me, playing the charging Zulus - scared the teachers shitless!)

Also got a soft spot for the near-epic Little Big Man.
