The point I'm trying to get at it is, is it not possible for Liverpool to have been rightful and deserved champions during a campaign where they were not confronted by a serious challenger? The same argumet was posed to City in 2017/18, and to United during the early-noughties, but all those teams, like Liverpool, were the class of their respective fields. It takes nothing away from their achievement.

I say this holding my nose as a man utd fan, but they were not confronted by a "serious" challenger because they were so far ahead of everyone else. Not becuase everyone else was poor, but becuase they were so good.

I followed united through the 90s and 00s and think this liverpool team would give united's best teams from that era a run for their money.

I'd agree with this 100% They are exceptional and are IMHO the best club side in the world right now.
I'd say Robert Firninho is lynchpin of that team and he makes them tick.

Agreed.
What makes them so special is the "teamwork" .
Some of the squad would not make other top teams on an individual basis

We're only a couple of games left now for most teams, Liverpool must be glad they had such a points lead as their results have been mediocre since the restart and all the anticipated records have fallen one by one.

A few skirmishes still to be had in the battle to avoid relegation but with Man Cities European ban being over turned earlier this week there is now a fight for the remaining 2 Champions league places and it's tight between Chelsea; Leicester and Man Utd -

Currently Chelsea have 63 points and a GD of 15
Leicester have 62 points and a GD of 31
Man Utd also have 62 points and a GD of 28 so only 3 less than Leicester

It gets interesting when you look at the remaining games though -
Sunday 19th Leicester whose form hasn't been so good lately are away to Spurs so that's a hard game and I don't see them winning it, perhaps a draw at best.
Wed 22nd Chelsea are away to Liverpool which should be a hard game for Chelsea despite Liverpool's drop in form
Wed 22nd Man Utd are at home to West Ham which should be a win for Utd who are possibly the form team at present

I can see Man Utd leap frogging Chelsea and Leicester going into the final game where Chelsea are at home to Wolves which again won't be an easy game however Leicester and Man Utd actually play each other in what could be a straight fight to qualify, think this could even go down to goal difference  :scare:

And just as tight at the bottom. Norwich already down . Bournemouth look doomed and the final place  will probably go the last game of the season between West Ham and Villa . Watford I think will be safe with another win under their belt. Another crunch game tonight between West Ham and Watford. A game neither team can afford to loose

I think we could see fans in attendance, though in limited numbers. Caught some of PSG's friendly with Celtic in Paris, where fans were in attendance. The NFL is also due to restart in September, and some teams have already announced that only 25% of stadia capacity will be used.

Southampton are selling season tickets for next season so they expect more than a small group of fans allowed in. Way people are talking won’t have full capacity at all next season so why sell so many season tickets to nearly fill the stadiums.? Prob ably as with all premier clubs supporters don’t matter. We were important all the way up from div1 during the bad insolvency days but once you hit premiership its fuck you we got TV money!

Yes not the smartest of moves. Deserved to go down for that very reason. Of all last seasons promoted teams Sheffield utd have acquitted  themselves the best. Norwich as Champions went straight back down and Villa avoided the drop on the last day of the season. Sheffield Utd could suffer from 2nd season syndrome next year though. Gonna stick my neck out and predict West Brom, Villa and whoever wins the play offs to struggle next season.

Yeah I believe the team who gets promoted by the play off doesn't have a very good record of staying up, would love to see Brentford promoted to the prem even if they were only up for 1 season, shame they fucked it up by losing their last 2 games

Crystal Palace have struggled scoring many goals for the last couple of seasons (possibly more) so unless they can find someone to start knocking them in then it's an uphill struggle to stay in the top flight, I predict West Ham & Brighton to also be in the thick of the scrap to stay up

Or perhaps not  :unknown:
I don't think they will pursue it but remember that 1st game back after lockdown where VAR went wrong and Sheffield Utd were denied a goal against Aston Villa  :unknown:

Well that gave Villa an extra point which is what kept them up at the expense of Bournemouth going down and they are musing a legal challenge

Can't see that happening as much as they are right. That 1 point has made a difference  but are are you going to question every wrong decision over an entire season. Even with VAR referees are still getting it wrong. In fact I think VAR should be ditched because it doesnt seem to be improving the game especially on hairline offside decisions it's a joke.  :dash: I am sure over the course of the season Bournemouth have had some dodgy decisions go their way.

There's some analysis in here showing how VAR has affected individual teams.  Not sure it's at all conclusive (or even 'helpful').  :dash:

I'd love to see Brentford get into the Prem just for the romance of the plucky underdog etc, I knew Brentford was somewhere in the South East but didn't realise it was actually in / around London and only about 4 miles from Fulham.

To think they could be in the Prem is unreal as they seem to have not only flown under the radar in terms of promotion to the top flight but I wasn't even really aware of their presence in the Championship, they could have been in the conference for all I knew until earlier this season when I picked up they were perhaps contenders.
I guess most people have been talking big all season about the bigger well known clubs such as Leeds; WBA; Forest; Derby etc

Same here. Have followed them since I lived in London in the 90s.

They have the unwanted record of being in their NINTH play-off campaign without getting promoted.

Would be good to see a different club make their debut in the PL.

+1. I've nothing against Fulham but it would be nice if Brentford got promoted to the top tier of English football.  They have not been there since the 1946/47 season. They also finished above Fulham in the league and apart from their last couple of games they were on a good winning streak. ( they are shortly moving to a new stadium)

If anything, Brentford have been a club on an upward trajectory. They've been perennial play-off contenders in the last few years, though this year they realised that they had something special. A lot of credit has to be given to their scouting department. They have unearthed some gems, with Saïd Benrahma being the latest one. I'd be surprised not to see him in the PL next season, whether with or without Brentford.

With two London clubs involved I don't have too much of a vested interest, though the romantic in me would like to see Brentford in the PL. I like Scott Parker, who has acquitted himself extremely well as a first-time head coach, though the last time Fulham got promoted they did not spend well at all. If Brentford do get promoted I think they would have a good chance of establishing themselves as the new Bournemouth. Plus, I have an uni friend who is an avid bees fan! Hopefully it's agood game.

Fulham back in the premier league. A horrendous mistake by the Brentford goalkeeper gifted Fulham their first goal. Overall I think Fulham deserved it on the night. Brentford looked a pale shadow of the team that had done so well this season.

"The Premier League season is due to start on 12 September 2020, with the final round of matches on 23 May 2021. The league says fixtures will be announced no later than 21 August.

Fixtures for the 2020-21 English Football League (EFL) season will be released on 21 August with the Championship, League One and League Two also all scheduled to start on 12 September."

I'm sure that on their day Barca can still beat anyone however last night was a combination of them playing badly and Bayern being awesome, surprised the Manager hasn't gone already as they end this season with sweet FA and it's about 12-13 years since that happened.

The ultimate irony is that Coutinho is a Barca player but on loan to Bayern, he came off the bench to set up goal 6 then knocked in number 7 and 8 himself  :scare:

I believe they were already favourites despite having to play Barca however now they are favourites, latest odds bearing in mind Man City V Lyon still to play tonight -
Bayern 6/4
Man City 5/2
PSG 3/1
RB Leipzig 23/2
Lyon 100/1

PSG are perhaps the best value at 3/1 as they arguably have the easiest semi final game against RB Leipzig so should actually make the final whereas Bayern and Man City play each other (assuming city beat Lyon) so one of the 2 favourites will go out in that semi

Offline Sparta Prada

I wouldn’t write off RB Leipzig just yet. They despatched a much fancied Atletico Madrid team very well, and PSG needed two injury time goals to beat Atalanta. Having said that, if Mbappe is fully fit this tips the game in PSG’s favour IMO.

In the Bundesliga it looks like the last three matches between Leipzig and Bayern have ended in draws too, should both progress to the final. I can’t see Man City or Lyon holding out against Bayern right now.

Offline ratedj

That Barca defeat was a few years in the making. It's a phrase often used, but it is the end of an era for that group. At best, their recruitment has been subpar; at worst, shambolic. Their major issue is that it won't be easy to navigate their way out of this mess. They simply have no money. The key for them is they badly require mobility, which they were shockingly void of this last night. It was too easy for Bayern to a) break the press and b) penetrate Barca in the final third.

As for Bayern, they are simply irresistible. I think it will be a Bayern/PSG final. You cannot discount RB Leipzig, but PSG's victory over Atalanta, and the manner of the victory, was a real psychological breakthrough, and Neymar and Mbappe have too much quality, and both seem ready to carry the burden of the team. How Barca miss Neymar.

Going back to Bayern, their current form just exemplifies the difference a manager can make. Earlier in the seaon they looked so blunt under Niko Kovač, but the appointment of Hans-Dieter Flick has completely transformed them. I would be surprised if City don't beat OL, and if they were to face Bayern I just don't see how their defence keeps that Bayern team quiet.

Ultimate irony, you say? It actually gets worse. If Bayern win the CL then Barca have to pay Liverpool €5 million (yes, you read that right) as part of an add-on clause, as Barca failed to make the clause club-specific rather than player-specific!

Lyon had previously knocked out Juventus, and now City. Thought City would win when it went to 1-1. Lyon got their tactics spot on tonight though. Wonder if Pep might now go back to Barcelona?

We could be looking at an all German final in the Champions League and United getting bragging rights over city if the win the Europa League. Season well and truly over for City, Barca and Juve. At least the latter won their league. Wonder how Barça rebuild and whether Messi wants to be part of a squad that will not win anything for a while.

I see in today's paper that some premier league clubs are now charging up to £100  for their new 2020/ 2021 season shirts. £100 for nylon tat.  :scare: If football fans have any sense they should refuse to buy them and leave the greedy clubs with thousands of unsold shirts on their hands. No doubt some mugs will still go out and buy them. :dash:

This has been the case for years, and it's the same in France, Germany, Italy and Spain. There are two options; you can purchase a 'stadium jersey' at £60/£65 (which is quite a bit of money in itself) or the authentic version, which is priced at £100. Also, it's the kit manufactures who determine the price of the kit, not the clubs. There used to be a rule in place where clubs would have to retain the same kit for two years, and I do think that this needs to be reintroduced.
