The Equalizer shown on tv again last night. I never get sick of watching McCall taking out the Russian pimps when he pays them a visit upstairs at their restaurant.  This is probably my all time favourite movie scene * :yahoo: especially killing one of them armed with just two corkscrews .
* if you've never watched this film then watch this scene on You tube.

Deniro is a film slag for hire, he seems to appear in any shit nowadays.

De Niro lost the plot years ago, as you say he appears in all manner of nonsense these days, can't be for the money because he has plenty of it. Prime De Niro was the period between 1974 - 1990, when he actually starred in movies that were worth watching.

Michael Caine has appeared in some awful films * over the years he admitted it in many interviews , as long it paid well he was happy. * Jaws the revenge springs to mind

Didn’t MC consider his 1978 stinker, The Swarm (of The Killer Bees) to be his rock bottom ?

I think Nic Cage runs MC à close second for chasing the bad movie pay cheque, but at least they both do it with gusto.

I read years ago that he hated Dressed to Kill - didn't attend the premiere, wouldn't discuss it in interviews etc. But I can't find any actual trace of this now.

In the grey.

Guy Ritchie's latest, modern heist come shoot 'em up.

Not his best work by some margin but it's stylish as they usually are and quite enjoyable in it's own way. Just don't be expecting anything cerebral or potentially award winning.

Now showing on Amazon.

I mostly agree, I'd add some caveats past 1990.

Meet the parents - 2010
Heat 1995
Cape Fear - 1991

The Gentlemen - Season 2 on Netflix

Guy Ritchie, like many story tellers (e.g. Woody Allen), has a style and character playbook. Ritchie uses offbeat characters to make his stories interesting, he has done that to death so much, that it is predictable and no longer keeps your interest.

He's done it again with the first four episodes of Season 2. Netflix lists it as a "Comedy".

However, there's a noticeable mood change from episode five onwards. The characters get darker and so too does the story line. It turned my opinion of The Gentlemen from a comedic gangster movie, to a deeper and highly enjoyable thriller.

I can't wait for S3.

I had never watched Rise of the Footsoldier series, I remember the Rettendon shooting on tv at the time, I enjoyed the first film, finished watching the fourth one Marbella, Tony Tucker and Ralph were funny as fuck, wonder if that's how they were in real life, they went to Amsterdam on a stop over to Marbella, and ended up spit roasting a alleged tranny and missing their flight.  :D

Same! I love Hans Zimmer’s score over the last two movies and feel like the last one he could really out do himself! I’m surprised they haven’t officially released the trailer music with the Fremen chant yet. Also, is the Oct 6th date confirmed for the soundtrack?

Bad Habits Die Hard (2020). A young man gets to meet his girlfriend's family and discovers that they are more terrifying than he could ever have imagined. Satirical horror from Italian director Riccardo Papa that mixes dark humour and bloody death to great comic effect, it's absolutely hilarious for the most part and the ending makes perfect sense which you rarely get nowadays with a modern film. Fortunato Cerlino and Federica Sabitini are both outstanding in their respective roles. A- Available on M4uhd stream.

Arthur's Empire (2026). A burnt out magazine writer in search of a human interest story gets sent to Blackpool and meets elderly Arthur, whose antique hall is earmarked for closure with the building about to be turned into luxury flats. Small scale British drama that in its own wryly amusing way captures the moral malaise of today's Britain. Arthur's Empire is low budget filmmaking with a big heart and a fair amount of brain to go with it. Recommended. B Available on YouTube.

Parallel Tales (2026). Sylvie, a once famous but now fading author decides to spy on her neighbours across the way as she seeks inspiration for a new novel. Life imitates art, all the characters are voyeurs to a greater or lesser extent and what's real or fiction is the one constant theme that runs throughout Parallel Tales. French drama with a hint of mystery, the chaotic narrative can be a bit challenging at times but PT is still a fascinating watch, the starry cast (Isabelle Huppert, Vincent Cassell, Virginie Efira, Catherine Deneuve) are all superb, it's capably directed by Iranian auteur Ashgar Farhadi. A- Available on Look2movie stream.

Last night I watched the Steve Coogan film Greed (2019) on Film 4.  It left a bad taste in the mouth.

I quite enjoyed the first half, but then it got preachy about working conditions in clothes factories on the Indian sub-continent – and, before the credits rolled at the end, we got a sequence of (appalling) facts about these places, interposed with facts about the wealth of the millionaires who make money from them.

You could argue that reminding us of the horrors of these places is always timely – but the trashy / preachy combination in a commercial film came across as smug and tasteless.

I agree. Definitely 'a game of two halves'. I enjoyed it.

Comedy is still there though throughout. Loved the scene with the Italian priest hearing Eddie's confession.

Chief of Defence Staff got a good line when asked what assets are protecting the major UK cities from missile attack.  He replied with we only have one operational Type 45 and that's protecting Faslane naval dockyard. Remember we did ask for 12 Type 45s and you built 6 and we only have the money to have 3 of them operational, so nothing is protecting the UK cities from missile attack.

I've not watched the Sky jackanory yet, but the CDS is correct, we're a sitting duck, a former RN Commodore Steve Jermy is a interesting fella, former air defence commander, has a substack and is regular on YT podcasts.

Trouble is we don't have that many jet fighters and the Eurofighter typhoon is beginning to show its age . The Bae Hawk jet trainer has been in service even longer and costs a fortune to maintain. So much that the Red Arrows often display with 7 aircraft instead of the usual 9

Fighter jets aren't good for taking out ballistic missiles. This programme does expose the UK's dependency on the US and NATO for defence as in the programme both the US and NATO decline yo come to the UK's aid and a result the UK gets hit by multiple Russian cruise missiles.

Offline RandomGuy99

Israel's air defence is not the world class system they and the media propagandise about. The volume of Iranian missiles saturated the defences.

Let's hope a war only lasts 1 week and 3 days then.

Ukraine is not degrading Russian military. causing big flames and smoke at refineries and hitting Wildberrie warehouses aren't degrading much.
But it has caused the Russians to use their MBT reserves, armoured vehicle stocks, missile stocks, ammunition stocks, general equipment stocks, small arms stocks, artillery shell stocks, interceptor missile stocks abd of use their troops who are being killed and injured reducing their capacity to conduct offensive and defensive operations on other fronts. It has also provided a useful way of observing and learning about Russia's equipment and ability to conduct military operations.

Russia is conducting cyber and other operations against the UK and other nations in retaliation of their funding and resourcing of Ukraine.

Offline stampjones

The whole thing about Russia attacking us mystifies me. They can't even take out Ukraine, a country they share a border with. How on earth are they supposed to attack us in any meaningful way 🤷
