Also watched Send Help recently. I thought that was excellent. Always had a soft spot for Rachel McAdams, and thought she did a great job with a good character. Lots of twists and turns, and at points it makes you question if you are rooting for the right character.

Watched Send Help last night… bloody excellent. Best film I’ve seen in a while - classic Sam Raimi story and cinematography. Loved it.  Both the leads were great, especially Rachel McAdams.  The only thing missing from this was a live, in-person cameo from Bruce - he was relegated to photos in this outing.  Highly recommended.

Sky Atlantic and HBO Max. Sky Atlantic is ahead of HBO Max. Series 3 has a lot of semi clad flesh, which I have been noting in order to submit a complaint.

I am also going to have to complain about Alexa Demie who is looking mighty fine

WAZ (2007). Incredibly bleak and disturbing serial killer movie that's well made but it's a tough watch nonetheless. Stars Stellan Skarsgard and Melissa George. B+

Ladies First (2026). Male chauvinist is transported to a matriarchal society after he suffers a knock on the head. British comedy that's basically a remake of the 2018 French film I Am Not An Easy Man (a far better movie), a dreadful film that insults both genders with its witless attempt at humour.  F

Over Your Dead Body (2026). When miserable couple Dan and Lisa retreat to a remote cabin for a romantic getaway, each harbours a secret plan to kill the other. Another remake, this time an American one that takes its cue from an original Norwegian black comedy called The Trip. Louder, bloodier but definitely no more funnier than the original film, OYDB is a bit of a drag and not really worth the effort at the end of the day.  C-

I haven't watched this yet but I think it would have to go some to be as good as the World at War. This is still by far the best history documentary series ever made imo.

Anyone seen the documentary on how David Beckham became a billionaire on tv recently. I was going to watch it but it was on for about two hours according to the tv listings so I didn't bother. I know he probably makes a lot of his money from product endorsments, hell, you only have to watch tv over christmas to see him appear in nearly every bloody advert endorsing beer ( stella) walkers crisps, Whisky etc. Don't get me wrong I'm not knocking the bloke but he's sure as hell made more money outside of football than he ever did playing football.

I think he's a billionaire because he's part owner of a US football team and they've got some really high valuation.

Watched the first episode just now and quite enjoyed it. From what I can gather it's a mash up between the superhero world done in the film Noir 30s style except in colour. Staring Nicholas Cage who is fantastic in everything he's ever been in even if the feature itself is utter shite.

Apparently there are two versions, full colour and black/white. I've only watched the colour version but there are some solid performances and the plot's holding up so far. EM

Just watched Anon. 2018 Sci Fi Crime Thriller starring Clive Owen and Amanda Seyfried. Originally by Netflix, but doesn't seem to be in their UK library now.

It has some great Sci-Fi elements. At some sort of cross section of Augmented Reality, AI Faked videos and State Surveillance. There are definitely some interesting warnings about the state of the technology, where it is going, and how that will impact our lives. Unfortunately the story just isn't gripping enough to convey that jeopardy effectively. Maybe it was, and still is, simply too far ahead of it's time.

Ultimately, it was okay, but not one I'd recommend.

Call me old school but it seemed a bit gung-ho for what purports to be a documentary series on a serious and complex subject.

Just watched the Netflix doc 'The Bus' about the French debacle in the 2010 World Cup in SA.
I've always thought that Domenech was a disaster as a coach who rode on Zidane's coattails but even I was astounded by what a total and utter fraud he comes across as.
Totally self-centred, egotistical, and an all round douchebag.

The Fall - Netflix

Started watching this again after first seeing it a few yeats ago. Stars the gorgeous and very sexy Gillian Anderson as a detective on the tail of a rapist/serial killer in Belfast.

I'd highly recommend if you like thrillers. Smart writing and terrific acting. Season 1 is easily the strongest

I found some of it rather juvenile, especially the scene where they help the tranny retrieve her belongings. Another scene seemed to me to have an agenda to bring to the fore the plight of homosexuals in a newly liberalised world.

Watched 'The Mother of All Cons', a documentary about a charity fraud. 3x60 min episodes on iPlayer. I like true crime, felt this was disappointing. Main issue was they could have covered it in one episode but it was strung out. You pretty much know what is going on from the first few minutes, there is a bit of a twist at the end but nothing major so just felt like a slow burn watching it all play out.

Also watched the first two episodes of 'Dear England' which is a fictionalised account of Gareth Southgate's reign as England manager. It was a play at the National Theatre previously. I'm a huge football fan, but couldn't engage much with it. I thought the conversations between the players during training and half time felt unnatural. Have to give credit to Joseph Fiennes playing Gareth Southgate though, he really looks like him and had the mannerisms down. Hearing the Harry Kane actor do Harry Kane's voice made me laugh. I don't plan on watching the remaining 2 episodes, but might do if I have a quiet evening before the actual football starts up on Thursday.

Everyone raves about Amandaland, but I found the second series, which ended last night, very disappointing (apart from Episode 3, in which Anne got involved with ChatGPT).  Last night's episode, focusing on preparations for the children's prom night, was – for me – totally unchucklesome.

There is to be a third series.  Too many trips to the well, in my view.  Most of the characters are rather dull, which was never a problem with Motherland, the predecessor show.

Some long-running comedy series rarely faltered (Yes, Prime Minister, Dad's Army – although the latter sometimes got a bit silly).  On the other hand there were just two series of, for example, Fawlty Towers – and that is often the right decision.

Born in the late 60s, I was vaguely aware of these stories and in particular remember seeing Don Revie on the front pages in the local newsagent when buying penny chews on the way home from school.
Another good mimicry performance from Sheen and solid support from the rest of the cast.
I'm not much of a follower of football or (dirty) Leeds but it's always a good watch. EM

Timathy Spall is also very good playing the part of his sidekick Peter Taylor. Incidently  Michael Sheen will shortly be taking over from Richard Osman as host of the BBC 2 quiz show House of Games.

Yes, Michael Sheen is an excellent impressionist. He does a brilliant Tony Blair too.  The performance which stood out for me was Colm Meaney as Don Revie, he too had him down to a T.

Last night on BBC4 I watched a much-acclaimed German film called The Teachers' Lounge.  (Odd translation! Something like The Staff Room would have been a more idiomatic title in English.)

Full of subtle and convincing detail, with a magnificent central performance from Leonie Benesch, the film is worth 99 minutes of anyone’s time.

My one criticism would be that, for a film grounded in low-key realism, there were, I felt, a few improbabilities and awkward narrative shifts in the latter stages.

I recommended this film a while back but glad you enjoyed it. Leonie Benesch is a very talented performer, check her out in another film called Late Shift (2025), it's definitely worth seeing.

For those who enjoy low-key, “slow-burn” films like The Teachers’ Lounge, I would recommend Alice, Darling, which I saw on Film 4 last night.

It is as convincing a portrait of a damaging, toxically manipulative relationship as I have ever seen.  But it is more than just that, with focus also on the three-girl friendship impacted upon by the manipulative relationship.  Attractive locations, too, and fine cinematography.

Finished it recently. Wasn't bad. Highlight was seeing Tessa Thompson getting railed by Master Chief in episode 1. Spotted the twist a mile off

Finished Dear England over the weekend. Enjoyed it more then I thought I would.

Seeing Southgates desperate attempts to win and throw his underlying principles out was interesting. Not award winning or owt but reminded my of how good that period was getting to 2 finals (not the losses lol)

Joseph Fiennes got Southgates mannerisms and everything right down and looked exactly like him at times. The others...not so much. Agree the Harry Kane guy was funny first time he spoke

I am aware I am an outlier on this but I hated the book. It read like a cheesy Hollywood film script with all the quips rather than reading a novel with underlying themes etc. I think the author was just thinking about the movie that was going to be made and thought he'd save the script writers a job and write the script for them.

I have had a bad experience with Andy Weir in general. I loved The Martian which is based on an Andy Weir book. I thought I would check his work out and rather than read The Martian I decided to read Artemis which I disliked so much I didn't finish it. Today I barely remember a thing about it, just that the main character who narrates the story being very odd. I picked up Hail Mary as saw some great reviews, definitely preferred it to Artemis but still ended up rating it 2/5 on Goodreads.

Like Sheep Among Wolves (2023). Undercover policewoman infiltrates a dangerous criminal gang with devastating consequences. Downbeat, depressing Italian thriller that's compelling enough for its running time.  B-

Kathleen Is Here (2024). A young woman leaves foster care and returns to her hometown. Emotional and compassionate drama from Irish director Eva Birthistle, this small gem of a movie is a perfect example of intelligent filmmaking, boasting insightful writing and sensitive performances. Hazel Doupe in the lead role is a revelation, an acting masterclass.  A

Seven Snipers (2026). A retired sniper is targeted by a vengeful warlord. As clichéd action films go, Seven Snipers is up there with the best of them, rank dialogue and pulpy violence in full supply, action junkies needing a fix will not be disappointed. Stars Tim Roth and Radha Mitchell.  C-
