Billy Wilder double - The Apartment and Some Like It Hot - two films superbly crafted, quite dark and ridiculously modern in their approach. The Apartment being about corporate corruption and integrity without being heavy handed wrapped up as a romcom. Some Like It Hot - effectively a body swap comedy about the male gaze - with a modern approach, handles it subject with more wit than Barbie.

Fantastic pair of movies AK. Wilder was one of the true greats, so many outstanding films from this particularly gifted director. I will add Sunset Boulevard, The Lost Weekend and Stalag 17 to the list.

Boyhood - 2014

Filmed over 12 years it follows a lad from 6 years old upto 18. Really impressive film making - to commit to such a long project as both filming and acting must have been a challenge.

Interestingly the next part of the script wasnt written untill everyone met up after 1 or 2 years and the next part was filmed. So no one was sure how it was going to end up.

Great to see how the young actors grow up including music choices, movie references and dodgy haircuts. Ethan Hawke has a great role as a single dad trying to improve.

The Boat That Rocked (2009), a Richard Curtis film about a 1960’s pirate radio station in the North Sea, with Philip Seymour Hoffman, Bill Nighy, Rhys Ifans & Kenneth Branagh. I saw it when it came out and thought it was rubbish, but rewatching its rather good with superb use of 1960’s music. It’s streaming in full (125 mins) on YouTube.

The Amaranth (2018). A wife and her ailing husband move into an isolated retirement village which seems too good to be true. Quietly creepy thriller about ageing and how we can prolong life for as long as possible, might be a bit on the slow side for some viewers but I found it engrossing for the most part. Starring Melora Walters and Jeffrey Demunn.  A-

Anti-Squat (2023). A struggling mother begins working for a startup in exchange for low rent and being a property manager. Provocative and morally complex social drama about the precarious nature of the housing situation in France and its impact on ordinary people. Excellent filmmaking from director Nicolas Silhol and a great lead performance from Louise Bourgoin make Anti-Squat a worthy and powerful cinematic exercise. Recommended.  A

The Redemption (2025). Petty criminal tries to find the money to avoid being evicted from his flat which he shares with his grandmother. Spanish drama thriller that's mostly watchable although you can see the ending coming from a mile off.  B-

Watched Mortal Kombat on Prime in preparation to watch the new one. It was okay.

Then Prime automatically played Good Fortune with Keanu Reeves as an angel. 2025 movie. Was interesting and enjoyable.  6/10

Watched Mortal Kombat II at the cinema.  Enjoyed it very much. Very brutal and has some funny moments.

I have mixed feelings on the Mortal Kombat films. Kitana was the highlight of the very first film for me ;)

Probably won't go to the cinemas for MK2 but will either purchase it when released or wait for it to go on Prime or Netflix.

Anything with Keanu Reeves in appears to be decent, so I'll have a look at Good Fortune on prime - thanks for sharing.

Offline The0neAnd0nly

I really enjoyed MK2 too. A massive improvement on first (new) one in every way really

Agree Kitana and her backstory was main plus. And the actress was hot

Surpsingly the low point was Johnny Cage played by Karl Urban. It was a even more grizzled depressed version of Billy Butcher from The Boys. His fight and interactions with Baraka were great though

Watched Mortal Kombat 2 yesterday night. I mean, its slightly better then the remake, Way better then Annihilation, but overall i felt dissappointed. 1995 version is way better.
However, both my sons are saying, They enjoyed it because they are more up to date with the recent MK games and are familiar with the story and characters. According to my kids (which is true), I frequently played MK1,MK2 & MK3 on the Snes, and later rarely played the ones released after, hence why i didn't enjoy this and the remake,  didn't fully understand story and prefer the simple 95 version.

"The Freak Brothers"
just found the first two series of this on "ThePirateBay"

TV version of "The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers" comic reset in the 2020's following a 50-year coma.
Highly funny, close to to the original though slightly toned down to suit modern sensibilities. Only major difference is that Fat Freddie's Cat is now a female nymphomaniac

Me too. I find it a bit crazy and insane, but I'm enjoying it. Loved what happened at the end of episode one of season 4.
A little bit confused by Julie. She sees her father's throat being ripped out, but later in episode 1, no sign she's aware of this. But then, she can time travel, so we're seeing manifestations of her in different time zones, but still not fully clear how this fits in the chronology of the series.

Last night on BBC4 I watched a much-acclaimed German film called The Teachers' Lounge.  (Odd translation! Something like The Staff Room would have been a more idiomatic title in English.)

Full of subtle and convincing detail, with a magnificent central performance from Leonie Benesch, the film is worth 99 minutes of anyone’s time.

My one criticism would be that, for a film grounded in low-key realism, there were, I felt, a few improbabilities and awkward narrative shifts in the latter stages.

Inherent Vice, 2014, from the book of the same name by Thomas Pynchon. Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, staring Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin & Owen Wilson. A plot so dense it’s all but impossible to follow, but it doesn’t matter as it’s a treat to sit through. Phoenix and Brolin are mesmerising, the kind of characters who don’t feature in movies anymore. Streaming on Amazon Prime now. Incidentally Anderson used Pynchon’s book Vineland as the starting point for the script for the recent multi Academy Award winning One Battle After Another.

Thank you for your suggestions.   My film-watching is, however, limited to what I can get on a smart TV (with Freeview), and I suspect it isn't possible to access thepiratebay or lookmovie2 on this pretty basic set-up?

Last night I watched the Panorama documentary about the Married at First Sight scandal:
External Link/Members Only

I hadn't heard of MAFS until a week ago, when my hairdresser was telling me how much she enjoyed it (“But I don’t think it’d be your type of thing” ), when she wasn’t telling me about the Michael Jackson biopic:
www.ukpunting.com/index.php?topic=454071.msg4463468#msg4463468

The Panorama report was deeply disturbing, with its allegations of sexual coercion and violence.

More widely, I have to say I found the whole concept of MAFS pretty repulsive, since the show seems almost inevitably to involve exploiting rather foolish young women.

(Though I'm aware it might seem to be a bit hypocritical to be taking the moral / aesthetic high ground on a prostitution website...)

The show is directed in such a way to create drama, especially between the couples themselves.

The women and men are equal in their behaviour and motivations for being on the programme. I wouldn't say they're foolish, they know exactly what they're getting in to. I would say the majority of both the men and women are attention seekers, trying to boost their Social profiles.

The programme is a commercial product, for getting eyeballs and advertising, so the producers have to create situations for people to tune in. It's no different to TOWIE, Made in Chelsea etc etc.

Offline Vice Admiral

I wouldn't say they're foolish, they know exactly what they're getting in to.

However, such is the way of the world, "knowing what you're getting into" is always more likely to come back and bite a woman than a man.

Although the alleged appalling behaviour of two or three men is obviously at the heart of this scandal, for me the single most jaw-dropping moment in the Panorama programme was when one of the women complained that the man had come inside her, which was contrary to what they'd agreed ... because she didn't want to get pregnant.

WTF?

So this gormless young woman goes onto a TV programme where it is all but certain that she will be having sex with a stranger, and has no contraceptive arrangements in place?  And instead intends to practise coitus interruptus, like some luckless teenager in 1960s Ireland.

What could possibly go wrong?

There was more on this on Newsnight last night, and there’s a detailed analysis here:
External Link/Members Only

I find the concept of these programmes distasteful.  I don’t watch them, but then they’re not aimed at me.  In any case what is to my taste is neither here nor there.  But there are issues that go beyond taste.

On last night’s Newsnight there was a bright and articulate young woman who had appeared on Love Island a few years ago, who spoke of the welfare team and the fact that afterwards those who appeared were entitled to a minimum of ten sessions with a psychologist.

And Google AI has this:  “The Love Island welfare team is a dedicated group of registered mental health professionals, independent doctors, and psychological consultants employed by ITV. They provide comprehensive duty of care to contestants before, during, and for over a year after their appearance on the show.”

There have, however, been two suicides by Love Island contestants, and famously it was a suicide that put paid to The Jeremy Kyle Show.

I find rather odd that programmes involving ordinary members of the public – by definition, amateurs in a professional world – should require safeguarding teams, the reason demonstrably being that the contestants are regarded as potentially vulnerable.

Those who appear on The Chase presumably don’t need psychologists to be available.  Nor, I imagine, did contestants on The Generation Game.

Bring back wholesome family entertainment!  Come back, Mary Whitehouse, all is forgiven!

Because the contestants have to be emotionally unstable to want to go on those shows in the first place, and since Caroline Flack committed suicide they are being closely watched and held to account. There have also been examples of participants in various high profile shows committing suicide years later, because they can't cope once their 5 minutes of fame fades away.

Gumshoe (1971). A would be private eye gets more than he bargained for after placing an ad in the local paper. Little remembered British curio from the early seventies that's best described as a pastiche of Hollywood thrillers/noirs of the 1940's. Albert Finney, Billie Whitelaw and Frank Finlay are the heavyweight players in a lightweight movie that pretty much fails on every level.  D

Thick As Thieves (1999). Thief who is betrayed on a job decides to get revenge on the gangster who set him up. Cool, sassy thriller with a zany sense of humour, TAT is a fun watch with a pair of great performances from Alec Baldwin and Rebecca De Mornay.  B+

Eugene The Marine (2025). Strange mixture of character drama and old school horror that feels like two separate films, with the former being far better than the latter, Scott Glenn in the lead role is the best thing about this slightly weird offering.  C
