The Residence on Netflix

Light hearted murder mystery series based on the White House in Washington

OK, so this may be a controversial opinion

It's not controversial. I admit, I too have seen Britain's got talent from way back. I enjoyed it, good Saturday TV with the family if we're home for the weekend. 10 to 15 years ago, there were some phenomenal acts.
Last 5 years has been dreadful.. This years been the worst. As you've rightly said.

- Golden buzzer is being awarded to any Tom dick and Harry.
- Before there were rules on 1 golden buzzer each, now its do whatever you want
- Simon was brutally honest and entertaining. NOW..His gone soft, doesn't want to make anyone sad anymore if they perform poorly
- The acts that are coming on are giving us some kind of sob story to justify their talentless talent.
- Most of the better acts are foreign BUT they will never win because it's Britain's got talent.
- The judges are all shite.. especially that fxxking Bruno.. Amanda laughs at anything, if a comedian comes on and opens there mouth, she will burst out laughing, even if the jokes not funny. I mean some of the comedians on this show have been rubbish, I'm not trying to come across aragant but you should see myself and my mates on a night out, were more funny.

I watch it in the background as Saturday's i usually have family over or vice versa and we leave the Telly on.
It's either Football (if on) or BGT or anything good.

BGT has gone silly awful

Haven't watched this for years. I think the last time I saw it was when Paul Potts won it. Not into opera music by any means but he was phenomenal and has had  quite a career from it.

I don't watch it regularly enough to know for certain myself, but Sis tells me there's often these "special interest" acts ( handicapped kids, deaf, etc etc) and they often get the golden buzzer, but get knocked out in the semis as the voting public don't vote for them.

Wheel of Time, on Prime TV, series in the same format of Game of Thrones; think it worth watching

Group of witches rule over the land, and witches have partners who are soldiers, and fight for the witches.  Witches are placed in to factions, and different powers.  Children are born as past warrior, and one boy is reborn, as the dragon born

3 series on prime, and think the final series is series three, and should conclude by the end of April

Online RandomGuy99

Reacher series 3 conclusion - not bad

Now on to Bosch Legacy final season which launched this week

Online RandomGuy99

Hannah Fry is back on the telly next week.

Last one laughing on Amazon Prime. The English one hosted by Jimmy Carr, had me in stitches. I tried the Irish version, not in the slightest bit funny, and now on to the Australian version.

Adolescence - pretty good.  A lot of talking but great acting.

Brave Heart - finally got round to watching this.  Apparently, historically inaccurate and it’s all BS but great movie!

Heretic - Never saw Hugh Grant as a villain but he was good in this.

Her - About people having relationships with an AI Operating System.  Bit like Alexa/Siri.  Not sure why they called it an Operating System in the movie but it’s quite old.

Nothing new in that.....I recently came across an old Isaac Asimov tale in which a blokes computer's operating system helped him pick the perfect partner, only for the OS to get jealous and frame him for financial fraud. Bloke goes to jail and the operating system becomes the girls new partner. I think the tale dated back to the 1950s

Holland (2025). A suburban wife's idyllic existence comes under threat when she discovers her husband isn't who he claims to be. I'm guessing director Mimi Cave's intention was to make a dark twisty type thriller set in picture perfect small town America, think Blue Velvet for example. What we get however is a fairly bland, almost formulaic mystery drama that never lifts off, the visuals are lush but the content is frustratingly sparse and lacking any real excitement. Stars Nicole Kidman.  C-

Little Siberia (2025). A pastor has a crisis of faith after a meteorite lands in his small Finnish village. Beautifully shot Nordic comedy, acting and writing more than decent, a feelgood movie that made me smile.  B

High Ground (2025). A criminal kingpin and his henchmen head for a small town in Colorado, intent on killing a witness who's testifying against him. A really dumb action thriller that would try the patience of even the most hardened fan of that particular genre I reckon. The final twenty minutes was like watching a parody of an old A - Team episode (it was an 80's TV show for the younger members on here). DIRE!  E

"Narrow Margin", this is one of my favourite Gene Hackman films. Hackman plays an assistant District attorney who has to protect a female witness to a mob murder. Also starring the lovely Anne Archer as the women he has to protect and James B Sikking as one of the bad guys out to kill her ( James B Sikking best known for his role in the tv series Hill Street Blues)  has a great fight scene on a train rooftop.

Offline PatrickCarnes

Big George Foreman biopic on Netflix. Just about watchable. No heart in the story until the last part covering his comeback to win the title aged 45. Forest Whittaker plays his trainer.

It's a good remake MrB, but the original 1952 film is actually better. Starring Charles McGraw and Marie Windsor in the Hackman/Archer roles, The Narrow Margin is a brilliantly effective B movie from that era.  🎬

This is a prequel series for Yellowstone which stars Kevin Costner. There is another prequel series called 1923 starring Harrison Ford. Both series tells the story of the Dutton family which own the largest ranch in America. Haven't seen 1923 but Yellowstone ( set in modern times) is well worth watching. It's a bit like the 80's tv series Dallas only better and about ranching rather than oil  :hi:

Statham proves the point that you don't need an ounce of talent to reach the very top, I wonder if he and Danny Dyer had the same acting coach.

Add Vinnie Jones to that list. The thing with Statham is he knows what his limitations are so is very successful playing the same role in every film.
I quite like Jason Statham films, simple plot with plenty of action / violence which doesn't tax the brain. :D

didn't know until today that James Bond was been sold to the Yanks in February:

"In a landmark deal, Amazon MGM Studios gained creative control of the James Bond franchise, following a joint venture with longtime producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson.

Amazon MGM Studios, formed after Amazon acquired MGM in 2022, now has full creative control over future Bond productions"

Oh dear! I wonder what they will do with it??

Apparently they're already working on a script for a Bond movie.

They need Bond to be an 18 certificate, hard to let him of his leash with the 12+ rating.  A full blown 18 certificate Tarantino escapade.  That would be worth watching.

Some Like It Rare (2021). A pair of struggling butchers hunt down vegans and turn them into mincemeat (literally), business booms. French horror comedy with a fair amount of grisly humour and dollops of blood, fun for about the first hour before it fizzles out.  C

Apartment 7A (2024). A down on her luck dancer becomes involved with a sinister couple who promise her fame and fortune. A kind of prequel to Rosemary's Baby, Apartment 7A is a pale imitation of that great film, it's nowhere near as creepy or suspenseful as Roman Polanski's classic masterpiece, all gloss but no real substance.  C-

Drop (2025). Widowed mother goes on a blind date and receives threatening text messages throughout the evening. Silly, gimmicky thriller, only real highlight is lead actress Meghann Fahy who's rather tasty.  D

Scent of a woman - very good
“Women! What can you say? Who made 'em? The hair... They say the hair is everything, you know. Have you ever buried your nose in a mountain of curls... just wanted to go to sleep forever? Or lips... and when they touched, yours were like... that first swallow of wine... after you just crossed the desert. Tits. Hoo-ah! Big ones, little ones, nipples staring right out at ya, like secret searchlights. Mmm. Legs. I don't care if they're Greek columns... or secondhand Steinways. What's between 'em... passport to heaven. I need a drink. Yes, Mr Sims, there's only two syllables in this whole wide world worth hearing: pussy. Hah! Are you listenin' to me, son? I'm givin' ya pearls here.“

This Month:
The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz (15)
Almost an incredible film. It's a Canadian film that is very Jewish, which I like. It came out in the early 70s at a time when Yissish slang was largely unknown to mass audiences, especially outside America. A young boy starts at summer camp and works his ass off, meets a girl, becomes a bit of a businessman. It doesn't sound good, but it's a banger, directed by Ted Kotcheff (Rambo).
Rating: 7

Anora (18)

Despite winning an oscar, it's very good, but not great. A young stripper/prossie meets a Russian billionaire, marries him Las Vegas and ostracises her. It's long for what it is and despite being a fan of the director's Red Rocket - every character is an annoying cunt and it's sort of underwritten; I wanted the bad guys to win.
Rating: 7

Paper Moon
An absolute banger from Peter Bogdanovich before his films took a real nosedive in the 80s and never recovered. The plot has been copied in both Leon and The Grifters. This is how you write a movie.
Rating: 8

Offline Dickled

I watched "It Happened One Night". At the Oscar awards of 1935 it cleaned up, including best picture, best direction by Frank Capra, and best actor and actress Oscars to Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert.
I found it superb, funny and unexpectedly touching.

Kravitz is a damn fine film AK, check out the source novel by Mordecai Richler, it's well worth reading. Paper Moon was ok from what I remember, great performance from Tatum O Neal who was only ten at the time. Bogdanovich has had a wildly varying career as a filmmaker, I personally loved Targets and of course The Last Picture Show.

The Prosecutor - Donnie Yen Film.  9/10

A young man is charged with drug trafficking, and he pleads guilty under influence from his defense lawyer in exchange for a reduced sentence. Former cop Fok (Donnie Yen) is an unconventional prosecutor assigned to the case. Fok is convinced that the conviction is unusual and decides to conduct his own investigation. What unfolds is a matter of his own life and career at stake as he goes a dangerous path to uncover the truth, and bringing the real villains to justice. Where the law ends, his justice begins.

Very very good watch.  Just shy of 2 hours, a good solid action movie.  Watch the subtitled one if you can, the 'dubbed' version sounds crap (lipsync issues).

The Last Picture Show is one of the greatest films ever made. As good as Tatum is, Ryan O'Neal as the quick talking conman is beyond good. I keep watching new films, but keep on being disappointed. Going to check out that novel - I've got a huge backlog of books to sort through.
