Carnage Park (2016). Two bank robbers, a hostage and a deranged Vietnam vet form the quartet in this somewhat unhinged "thriller". A film very much influenced by Tarantino and seventies grindhouse cinema, surprisingly quirky although predictable at times. Kick ass performance from Ashley Bell in the main role.

The Nest. Cinema. Slow start, but gets better all the way through.
Drama / thriller / family turmoil / emotional. 2020 movie. Cert 15.
Stars Jude Law & Carrie Coon.
All play good parts. Decent story. 9 out of 10.
Set in the 1980s.

Personally i thought it was appaulingly bad , apparently based on a true story and somewhere in there may be an interesting story but the film just took the sensational aspects and threw them together into a messy uninspired shock flic , and apart from Ashley Bell the acting was dire , it was like it was made by the guy who made thunderbirds it was that wooden.
But thanks for the recommendation , interesting to see what other people are watching

Ben Is Back. Netflix. Decent film. From 2018. About a druggie son returning home.
7 out of 10, I thought. Good story, well acted by all.
Stars Julia Roberts. Drama / family issues / drugs.
Certificate 15. Worth watching.

Classic Double Bill:

Fahrenheit 451 (1966). Truffaut's entertaining adaptation of the Ray Bradbury novel. Oskar Werner is the fireman burning books in a future dystopia, still holds up quite well after all this time.

The Ballad Of Cable Hogue (1970). Of all Sam Peckinpah's westerns, this is probably the most misunderstood and under appreciated. Largely non violent and somewhat comedic, this was one of his best and most endearing films.

Good reviews "but" I thought it was very average. Not recommended.
Too much fighting and excessive CGI. There is humour in the film.

Damn... had high hopes for this after the mediocrity of Black Widow. Seems like Phase 4 hasn’t got off to a good start.

Thanks for confirming, I was not enthused by the various trailers.
I will try to see in cinema but at cheapest rate possible, perhaps weekday, daytime @ Peckham multiplex

The BBC are often criticised for their lack of quality programs but I have to say how good The Keeper was on BBC2 last night. This told the true story of Bert Trautman the German former prisoner of war who went on to play in goal for Manchester City. He famously played part of the 1956 FA cup final against Birmingam City with a broken neck . He married an English woman and lost his young son who was knocked down and killed in a tragic accident. Even if you are not a football fan it is a very moving story showing how he had to fight to be accepted by the British public in post war England after World War 2. A remarkable story about a remarkable man

Not sure the BBC had anything to do with the film's production, though.

Probably right. A good film nonetheless . Surprisingly the football match scenes were done well which a lot of films about football fail to do.

I see Billions is back on Sky this Wednesday.

It's the resumption of Season 5 that was interupted 7 episodes in. Hopefully they'll air a recap beforehand cos I can't remember what happened previously.... think the bald fellah had fucked Ax over but details are fuzzy for me.

Good show, easy to follow and some top acting. Yeah, the constant see-sawing in the battle between Chuck and Ax is becoming a bit cartoony with both of them apparently "out for the count" several times already but back on their feet the following week/series. But, its still good fun.

It's more of the same, guns, drugs, car chases and violence. This is the 5th in the series and it's proving to be a good cash cow for all concerned.
Who'd of thought 4 dudes shot gunned to death in a Landrover in Essex would spawn a series of films?

It's Cinema only at the moment, dvd release in December so says Prime delivery. You can bet your bottom dollar it'll be on certain internet sites long before that.

I watched 9/11 Life Under Attack on ITV last night.
I tend to steer clear of "September 11th" documentaries now, I watched so many when the dreadful event was more recent.
But the cinema-verite way in which this was filmed, with amateur footage and the responses of ordinary people caught up just made it so grimly compelling, and the reality of what one was viewing on screen somehow made it seem it couldn't be real, that something like this could surely not be happening.
But it was. Horrible, but unforgettable.

I didn't realise that some of the firemen on the ground where killed by people jumping off the buildings landing on them.

I also didn't realise that the pilot on the plane that crashed into the ground was black. That piece of info seemed to get lost in the media coverage.

You Can't Kill Stephen King (2012). A group of young people visit Maine, hoping to find the authors house. A really lame horror spoof, even the obvious references to his novels aren't enough to save this turkey.

SK doesn't make an appearance as himself, just as well!

Annette, at Everyman Cinema. Musical drama.

Good reviews. "But" I thought it was a load of rubbish.
One of the worst films I've seen this year.
Crap singing, garbage story, no drama.
Stars Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard.
I struggled to stay awake it was that boring.
2021 movie. Certificate 15.

Anybody watching the TV series Britannia set in 43 ad about the Roman occupation of ancient Brittain. I have been watching it from the start but it can only be described as slightly bonkers. Mackenzie Crook stars as a druid and the excellent David Morrisey as a Roman General . Just an example of how slightly bonkers it is the theme tune is "Hurdy Gurdy man"

Recommendation for Nymphomaniac (2014) the story of a nymphomaniac , what makes it good is that it isnt told like an enjoyable sexual romp , its shown as a psycological condition , quite a souless , callous and sociopathic in nature. Its starts out with the woman as a schoolgirl going out with a friend dressed up a slutty as possible having a competion to see who can have sex with the most people on a train. It uses the C word alot and features full genital and sexual graphics like one of the guys in the train cumming in her mouth , so its full on hardcore. I found it quite insightful aswell as entertaining , something in it for everyone

I had to google LVT , Lars von Trier, never heard of him before. Depends if by "standard LVT film" you mean its is good or crap , i thought it was very good.
Gonna try Antichrist next , hopefully its standard LVT and uncomprimisingly hardcore gross, thanks for the recommendation

He has enthralled and damaged me more than any other artist. David Lynch can be weird and sublime but Lars Von Trier has hurt me more than a broken romance. I'm impressed but I'm probably too scared to watch any of his work again. He is a great Film maker and I love him.

'Breaking the Waves' was a bit of a slog to watch.
'Kingdom Hospital' was excellent (especially the Spanish nurse

Classic Double Bill:

Theatre Of Blood (1973). Vincent Price is the Shakespearian actor taking his revenge on the critics who have been less than generous about his performances. Extremely funny and quite graphic in terms of violence, this remains one of the best horror comedies to come from these shores.

Opening Night (1977). An alcoholic actress struggles with real and imaginary demons, in the run up to the opening night of her latest play. Directed by John Cassavetes and featuring a stellar performance from Gena Rowlands in the lead role. Cassavetes never appealed to the critics yet his films have a rare honesty and humanity, not always easy to watch but ultimately rewarding.

The North Water. On BBC iPlayer. Absolutely brilliant series. 10 out of 10.
From a book of the same name. 5 episodes. Intense acting by all. 2021 drama / mystery.
About whaling in the Arctic in 1859. Stars Colin Farrell.
You will enjoy "I think". Great location filming.
Good reviews.

Recently watched the film "Tora Tora Tora" about the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. A bit of a slow burner to get going but a better film than "Pearl Harbor" starring Ben Affleck which is more of a war time romance film.

Two films I watched on Netflix recently.
First was "Kate" which is a kind of female John Wick/Crank. Pretty derivative, silly and implausible but I liked it all the same and Mary Elizabeth Winstead was impressive I thought and defintely channeling sone Ellen Ripley vibes.
The second one was "Shot Caller" about a successful financial trader who ends up in jail and is forced to join a white supremacist gang. Even when he's eventually released and attempts to go straight they make it abundantly clear he can't just walk away. Stars Nikolaj Coster-Waldau who is perhaps best known for GOT.
As with ""Kate it's a little derivative and clicched in places, but the performances make up for this I feel. Definitely worth a look.

I read The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks this past week. It was my first Iain Banks book and I went into it blind not knowing what the plot was. I enjoyed the book overall. The plot was quite depraved and I winced in a couple of places which I think is saying something as I considered myself fairly hardened on the gross stakes. A standout for me was that the misty Scottish Isle where the story is set felt really cosy and atmospheric. The ending also really surprised me I had no inkling what was going to happen. One of the better books I've read this year so far so will check out some other books by the same author.

An excellent novel. Have you read The Cement Garden by Ian McEwan, similar in nature and very good too.

I have read The Cement Garden and I thought it was brilliant! I read it in my early 20s and my tastes have changed quite a lot but I think I would still really like The Cement Garden if I read it now. Might be worth another read through. That was another book which had a good atmosphere about it where everything seems calm and relaxed but throughout you can tell something really sinister is happening. Can definitely see why you compare it alongside The Wasp Factory. I find Ian McEwan much more miss than hit in my opinion so I don't read his books now. Any other Iain Banks you recommend for me to read next? If I like an author I aim to read one of their books a year so I don't get over saturated with a particular authors style (like I did with Stephen King when I somehow read 10 of his books in one year!).

This morning I started The Return of The Native so something a bit different. I'm also going through a bit of a graphic novel stint at the moment. I like reading graphic novels but they are expensive so get them from the library rather than buying them. That is an advantage of me working back in my office twice a week as I can pop to the nearby library which has an excellent selection of graphic novels.

Cable Hogue is a great film, and shows there is more to Sam than just violence. Think this was his only film where he approved the final cut, but may be getting confused there

Interesting, I didn't know that. As you say there was more to Peckinpah than just violence, Junior Bonner was another one of his films that proved this.

Fucking hell! Chuck (Paul Giameti) has lost about 6 stone and shaved his beard off. Its really weird and distracting! I thought actors had clauses in their contracts to prevent this???

Overall an interesting alternative to the lame horror films ordinarily encountered..

He replays the opening scene in a subsequent film and the child doesn't fall. I can't remember which one. If I'm incorrect it proves how much he has messed up my head.

Office Killer (1997). Having problems with your fellow office workers, why not murder them. Wickedly deranged black comedy that strikes the right balance between blood and humour. Carol Kane is suitably nutty as the proof reader who understands the need for staff reduction.
