Wow, that book looks amazing!

I'd be interesrted to know if it does mention "Something Evil".

I have a number of books in my collection that are about horror fims and the history of. I have a few "behind the scenes" and "making of....." type books as well as a small collection of some of the earlier editions of Fangoria magazine, Cinefantastique magazine and Cinefex.

The first season of True Detective was truly brilliant television. Matthew McConaughey hasn’t had a better role since. Season 3 was also quite good albeit with a different cast and completely different story. Chernobyl was the last truly brilliant series I think I watched.

The Wire is of course brilliant as well. I was thinking about buying the box set for all times sake.

As for movies I have watched some great movies on MUBI which is an app for mostly foreign films, independent films and past films. I watched the Japanese movie our little sister and the french film the past yesterday.

I'd seen "Hardware" (1990) & "Dust Devil" (1992) - Both very low budget - but both pretty entertaining - Then he went to make the "Island of Dr Moreau" - then just disappeared. This documentary explains it - If you have seen it, my apologies - If you haven't - One to consider.

Oh, and Val Kilmer apparently is a complete dickhead.

The Founder (2016)

Sounds boring, I didn't find it so, in fact it's a pretty shocking depiction of how Ray Kroc basically stole the McDonalds business plan & went on to become a very, very rich man.

I really rate Michael Keaton & would give anything he's in a watch, hence me viewing it. Up to you, one to consider maybe.

It turns the whole "Hill-Billy psycho killers in the woods" trope on it's head. It's hilarious and a little bit gruesome, but mostly hilarious. Watching the trailer again just made me laugh so much I hiccupped, and it only scratches the surface.

Highly recommended.

I agree, the OTT acting was fitting to the character/events.

Yes, seen them both, I struggled with 'the octopus' scene - disgusting, fortunately I was watching it alone so just skipped it - but yes overall I think they are both great - refreshing that the American remake was so well done - Particularly considering the dark nature of the story - Just N A S T Y

Actually thinking about Elizabeth Olsen (and her tits) - might want to mention :

Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011) - The plot focuses on a young woman suffering from delusions and paranoia after returning to her family from an abusive cult in the Catskill Mountains.

And

Silent House (2011) - Freaky, all in one shot psychological horror - Thinking about it, the film has a similar theme to Oldboy in some respects.
It's not a groundbreaker, neither are, but they held my attention & I watched them both all the way through. So just saying.
 
Other than Wind River (2017), she has sold her soul to Marvel.

District 13 is quality, the sequel not so much (still not bad).  You don't really get those gritty urban dystopic films anymore, studios are too busy regurgitating fantasy schlock now.

Last one I saw like that was Dredd and even then it is a sci-fi to an extent. You could have a normal cop and set it in present day and it would still work. I think films go through cycles: Neo-Noirs you don't see that often, but they were everywhere in the late 80s\early 90s then came back a bit in the early 2000s with films like Hollywoodland. Then you had slasher films massive in the 70s and 80s then a resurgence with Scream for about 5 years and now the only ones you get a cheap straight to DVD or comedy ones. Most mainstream films are either superhero, hard sci-fi, action thriller, period drama and culture clash comedies.

I think I'm correct in stating its John Carpenter's debut feature?
Either way, it's a superb film with an almost claustrophobic sense of tension and dread.
As an added bonus, it features and excellent, Kraftwerkesque soundtrack, which I believe was scored by Carpenter himself.

Either way, it's a superb film with an almost claustrophobic sense of tension and dread.
As an added bonus, it features and excellent, Kraftwerkesque soundtrack, which I believe was scored by Carpenter himself.

Down By Law (1986). Jim Jarmusch's second film and maybe his best. Starring John Lurie and Tom Waits, this is classic independent American cinema.

Jarmusch lost his way in later years but his early work was up there with the best of the indies at the time, the cinematography here was provided by the legendary Robbie Muller, in black and white and all the better for it.

Silly but entertaining science fiction film - Skip this post if that's not your thing 

I've watched every Luc Besson film (I think) - I hadn't gotten around to this one, until recently.

Amazing special effects, silly 'story' but I was watching - not thinking if you know what I mean, lot's of action & adventure, actings ok, Rhianna is in it for about 5 minutes, doubtless he only cast her because he fancied her, I've only ever seen Cara Delevingne in "Suicide Squad", it's crap & she's crap in it - But she fits this role really well IMO.

Bit too long but I sat all the way through it - Turn your intelligence off & you might have a good time.

Partial recommendation to fans of sci-fi fantasy 

Oh for the record - I didn't like "The 5th Element", seen it twice, thought it was crap both times - This movie actually feels similar in it's structure & look - I just couldn't get past Chris Tuckers 'performance' in that.

The two pretty much ran by side. It's weird when you think about it, but I knew people who still owned a ZX 81 Spectrum when the Playstation 1 was out. The Amiga has a cult following and it was much more popular than people seem to remember at the time, but it was expensive in today's money it would be about £750-900, but about half the price of an IBM PC or Power PC Mac at the time. What a lot of people fail to mention is the number of truly good games on an Amiga you can count on two hands, compared to NES, SNES, Mega Drive, PS1, Saturn etc where there's loads of good games for each system.

But, I digress this is about films.

It was different, I'll give it that - Started very well but fell apart at the end IMO.

I did watch "Gretel & Hansel" (2020) - (See what they did there ??  ) recently.

Reminded me of "The Witch" (2015) in the way it looks, all the acting is convincing, the limited special effects are excellent, Alice Krige is really good - It plods about at some points, but I watched it all and thought it was okay, it does look very atmospheric - One to consider maybe as it's tough to categorise.

El Camino is a film about what happened to Jesse Pinkman.

It is worth a couple of hours if you liked Breaking Bad.

I think I like anything 'Breaking Bad'. Best characters IMO are Mike and Skinny!

Is it just me or does it appear that no matter what channel I switch on in the evening bloody NCIS always appears to be on or one of it's offshoots NCIS los Angeles or NCIS New Orleans . A lot more than one would imagine...... And not including deaths in combat!!

It looks like they have only covered about 2-3 years worth of deaths in the 18 years they've been on TV!
