The "other" sounds like somebody trying to hide something, and quite a lot of Romanians can manage some  Italian as the two languages are fairly similar. If she was Romanian, then you experience sounds just about par for the course.

She told me she was spanish and from Malaga. I spoke a little bit of spanish that I know and she didn’t have much of a clue what I was saying
