no, you don't need to be a (subscribed) premium member to see profiles - but you do need to be "signed in" at the time of trying the link. sometimes links don't work because the lady has deactivated her account or has previously blocked you!

i had that a couple of months ago when i de-activated my membership (put it on hold) and then got email messages that my card did not have enough money for the subscription. I emailed customer services and they dealt with it quickly but did say you have to cancel your "auto-renewal" separately.
