For any newbies to Brazil here is my summary of places to visit. I'm sure marmalade will correct my misunderstanding of terms as he knows a lot. Altho I've not been to some places like termas, the info is from a WA group of people currently in Rio who share info.

In order of prices:

VM itself isn't dangerous. There's private security and they handle any problems very fast (I've also seen it in action for instance with loud mouthed Americans!) But the streets leading up to it can occasionally be a hoodlum haven.

From under the bridge, where there's a V junction, it's best to take the left-hand road. There's local people and families living there and when I last went a great music venue and a by-the-hour motel. Then at the top as you know you just turn right into VM. I only go the other way if I'm with a p4p.

I imagine it's reduced in size due to Covid. It's always been aimed more at locals. The rooms vary a lot but the beer is cheap once you get used to the 'claustrophobia'! The downside is the silly increase in prices. It was 20Rs (about £4 even at old exchange rates) and an extra 1R for a condom if you hadn't brought your own. Then it suddenly went up to 100...

When I say it's 'safe' I don't mean there aren't one or two girls who won't quietly rob you as you're shagging them if you are silly enough to leave a pocket with cash lying around, but I'm pretty sure you won't see any violence actually inside VM. Now, as you see, it's no longer good value compared to the clinicas, but it's still a sight to behold and I hope you felt it was worth a look. It's also all independents.

On danger generally, you have probably noticed that nobody runs anywhere. If you see someone running, they've probably just robbed someone. If you see someone that looks dodgy, even in Copa, don't be all PC, just cross over, go in a shop or get outta there. If you're on a bus at a quieter area (eg Praça da Bandeira) and a dodgy character suddenly gets up a few seconds after you to get off at the same stop, just sit down again and get off at the next one and walk back. You make important points. As you walk round Rio you might notice how few people actually wear a watch at all, and many only carry belongings, if they have to, in a disposable supermarket carrier bag rather than a nice bag more attractive to robbers bag (though a cheap-looking rucksack is ok. Taxis often don’t stop at red lights at night to avoid cat-jacking.

This all sounds OTT at first but really, unless they’re going somewhere posh that they know is safe, Cariocas simply have adjusted their way of life to avoid problems and enjoy life. They carry what money they intend to spend that day, not a posh wallet full of notes and credit cards. If they go down the beach, money for beer and deckchairs might be in the lining of their shorts. They develop 360 degree vision for problems and then relax. They don’t raise their voices. They don’t run. They stand up straight (rather than slightly hunched as in the West).

A phone isn’t very necessary. One can make calls from the iPhone before leaving the apartment or hotel and carry a shit phone if you really have to. Also only in the hotel/apto, use Google translate for a few phrases (for chicas and taxis) then you interact more and don’t look a dork. The Metro is straightforward, a few useful bus routes are easy to remember. If I have to carry and use a phone I go into a shop or something. Condoms, a notepad, a few reais (notes) with large notes in one place and smaller ones in s different, more accessible pocket (I use a rubber band).

Marmalade makes some great points the only issue I have is I need to carry my phone.  I need Google maps, Uber is a third the price of yellow cabs and more importantly girls won't tell you their apartment number until you've arrived. You need to message the girls to say you have arrived and they tell you when you can go up. Plus as happened today the girl may let you take photos (the remaining photos will remain in my collection)

Masks are common place on the streets, 80% are wearing them. They are mandatory on public transport, metros buses, in hotels, shops, apartment common areas.

Restaurants are meant to ask for your vaccination proof, not many do, but a few do.

Also in gyms masks are mandatory

If you are coming to Brazil for a short time, use termas and the nicer clinics, more expensive but in termas you get top quality. Possibly mabs too if you like evening entertainment.

To note for others, some places I messaged did have restrictions on guests, usually that only two people can be registered to the apartment during the stay, so you can have a guest but building security wouldn't allow a different guest after this. So best to check rules before booking.
