It'd be a good 20-25min drive by car from train station as Syston is a small town on the northern outskirts of the city and some of the busiest roads to get through.

I could be wrong on this but I'm sure there's a train service that runs from Leicester to Nottingham, going via Sileby, Barrow on Soar, Loughhborough, etc. I suspect it may be at peak times only and that hey may not be that frequent. Worth checking out.
