I can't be bothered to do a big search, but I've seen many on AW lately.

And of course the 'numbers' you quoted are meaningless in this regard, that was simply a list of providers and their stated, 'verified' nationalities.

The point is that many obviously-Brazilian WGs are somehow getting past AW's (laughably un-rigorous) checks and stating their nationality as 'Italian'.

Which suggests fake passports or some other subterfuge.

I know for a fact it is because it easy to claim italian heritage and get an Italian passport. It does cost a far bit, but an EU passport is worth a fair bit to a brazilian WG.

Im not sure what the ramifications are after brexit, but for now they can come and go as they please. With a brazilian passport that would require visa extensions, more money and its basically more difficult to stay here indefinately with one.

I believe what's been negotiated for EU citizens after Brexit, is that if they've lived here for 2yrs already then they can stay on with indefinitely without the need for a Visa. Right of Residency. So this would apply to these 'Italian Brazilians' too I should imagine.

There'd be access to healthcare for free, I'm not sure about other benefits, social security etc? Bear in mind it's very unlikely any tax or NI has been paid on those AW earnings.

For Europeans that's fair enough, it's a reciprocal agreement where Brits can do the same elsewhere in Europe. But could I as a Brit just rock up in Brazil and stay as long as I liked, and enjoy the local 'hospitality'? I somewhat doubt it.

It's pretty well immigration by stealth. So actually, I think there is an issue!

And yes, I can well believe the Italians would take a 'laissez-faire' attitude to issuing passports  .

It's probably a discussion to start in off topic if you really want to get into it, but I've met lots of people from all over the world that used European passports to work in the UK. Brazilians, Argentinians, Costa Ricans and South Africans with Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and German passports working in all sorts of professions like architects, pilots, solicitors, IT. These are just the ones that come to mind immediately. And I also know plenty of Aussies, Kiwi's, Canadians, South Africans (again) and others working in Europe using British Passports.

It's not a Brexit thing. It's been going on for years. As someone mentioned above if you can demonstrate ancestry and jump through any other hoops it's easier and cheaper to do that than go down the Visa route. I'm sure there are also plenty ways to play the system even if you don't have legitimate ancestry (wouldn't be surprised if there are companies out there making good money advising people how to do it).

Brexit could be an added reason to do it now. But, there's also plenty of reasons other than Brexit why WG's would want to present their nationality as something other than Brazilian (Or Romanian, or etc, etc...).
