Author Topic: How to not be overly noticeable when going to a meet  (Read 3441 times)

Offline Fallion

I have a question that I hope many will be able to answer,

How do you stay somewhat under the radar when going to a meet?

I am relatively recognisable and would like help/info on how to not stand out too much. I am well aware that if I gave out specific information on this forum, I would be identified quite easily.

Do you choose not to dress in overly bright clothes or wear something that you usually don't, when going to a meet?

For example do you not wear your everyday clothes so a friend/ relative wouldn't recognise you too easily?

I am planning for my first meet in over a year and would like not to stand out easily, due to the areas I am currently looking at I run a risk of seeing people I know. I am restricted in the areas I can go to too, so that isn't helpful.

Any advice is more than welcome, so I can start getting reviews up and been helpful rather than leeching.

Cheers

If you meet people you know, a change of outfit is not going to stop them recognising you, and they will wonder why you are dressed differently  :sarcastic: :sarcastic:

Relatively recognisable and can only punt in certain areas where people might know you, suggests to me that a different hobby would be wise!

Offline NigelF

It has basically nothing to do with how you're dressed (unless they already know you as Silver Birch has suggested).

Hanging around glued to your phone is the only big clue but it still requires people to know there's a prossie working nearby - which is very unlikely. Also, loads of people hang around randomly anyway (especially sat in cars) and everyone these days is glued to their phone.

You need to learn to accept the fact that everyone is "noticeable" and you will be noticed but by the same token you will also be almost instantly forgotten.

Even if you are noticed and suspected of being a punter, so what? The only thing you need is an excuse for being there in case you bump into someone you know. You're only "restricted" by your inability to come up with a good excuse and/or to stop caring so much.

Have a read of some of the "Featured" topics on this page for some general punting tips:

Other than that, just do whatever you were doing before.

It used to amuse me outside Sandys when a punter would turn up and try to not be noticed.

One guy was giving it 3 or 4 big looks up and down the street before ducking in to the alleyway by Tesco.

Just be yourself, acting differently is a sure fire way to stand out

Common sense most of this punting stuff.  Try not to worry too much and have a pint first to settle any nerves.

I wear usual clothes and opt for trainers in case I run into a scam and need to make a dash for it which hasn't happened yet. If I bumped into someone I know then I am sure I could come up with an excuse why I'm in the area.

If an escort it running late even by a couple of minutes it looks fishy just standing outside the premises so I normally find the location so I know where it is then find a shop nearby to have a browse to pass the time.

I was leaving a meet once in a block of flats and the neighbour was going into her flat and I sensed a really dirty look from her so I reckon she knew what was going on and what I had been doing. I wasn't too bothered just one of those things.

Another time I went to a flat where a couple of girls were working and I saw a guy with a thick coat and flat cap outside the same place checking his phone. He was pacing up and down then he suddenly looked at his phone and went in the flat. I knew there were escorts in the block so I knew what he was up to he looked totally suss.

But are you sincere about waiting to be inconspicuous, Sir Michael? Particularly after so recently resigning from the government  because of alleged indiscretions with women, wouldn't it have been better to have devised a nickname on here which was more than just inserting an 'i' in your surname?

And particularly if you're going to be a punter. After all, that's surely an occupation second only to being a politician in terms of attracting public opprobrium, isn't it? Perhaps it might be better to choose something lower profile like stamp collecting or train spotting??

Offline brianthedog21

Hi Fallion,

Joking aside I think you need to find a location where you will feel relatively at ease. I wouldnt punt on my own street because Id be stressed out. If Mrs Brianthedog confronted me wearing my punting Ghillie suit I would be so stressed I wouldnt look that calm and believable.

Punting in a location that doesnt add to my stress is a must.

By the way you are not a Leech in my book. Youve only just joined and I think a few questions are fine. Give it two years and if all your posts are questions I would not for one would not bother giving you tips on the punting disguises I use. Just my opinion.

Good luck and remember to cover any open ground quickly!

1. Don't loiter. Browse in a shop, go to the pub, sit in the car - anything but pace up and down outside checking your phone every 20 seconds

2. Park away from the premises. A couple of streets away, pub carpark, shopping centre car park - anywhere but right outside which gets the neighbours net curtains twitching.

3. Walk purposefully there (after all you are there for a purpose!!) You look far less suspicious than the twitchy punter pausing every few steps and glancing around nervously.

4. Have your excuse/reasons to be there thought out beforehand and make it plausible ("come to look at a second-hand iPad")

5. Dress normally. Should you encounter an acquaintance they won't think "why is he all dressed up?" and it adds corroboration to your pre-planned excuse.

Just act yourself, don't do til things that will draw attention to your self, as stated before like wearing weird clothes, or looking shifty.
If you are that concerned, don't punt in an area where you think you might get caught. I punt locally, but it doesn't bother me as I am divorced,

Dye my hair grey and put on glasses. Walk with a limp and never ever look anyone in the eye.

Easier said than done cos I’ve already got a limp and I keep falling over.

Seriously though, if you are that easily recognized, just book an outcall to a Hotel...

So, OP, assuming you're not incredibly vain, I presume you stand out physically rather than being in the public eye. If the latter, well that's the price of fame eh? If you're 7ft tall, then a Chewbacca outfit is my only offering.

All the advice above is sound. Be prepared, be natural, be confident, minimise your exposure in the open (e.g. get a cab to drop you off close to where you need to go). If you are really worried about it, do an outcall. Might cost a few more quid, but what price for less stress? It will ease you back into the game, and you could consider incalls in the future. Best of luck.

I sometimes still take the briefcase on hotel meets.

But really nobody takes much notice of anyone else and what if they do?

Does this really need to be asked?
Seems like common sense to me.  :unknown:

Don’t punt where people may know you.
Don’t act like a shifty weirdo when approaching the property.
Dress casually or smart, doesn’t really matter.
Obviously you wouldn’t wear bright coloured clothing...
Be confident and purposeful.
When leaving don’t start skipping down the road and high fiving everyone.
Just get home and write a review.

I guess my question has been answered and then some, sometimes the obvious isn't easy to see for me.

I had some free time today and tried to book a meet, but I didn't hear back from her, most likely my fault for not trying to arrange it right.

Cheers for all the replies though  :drinks:

Punters are recognizable by:
glued to the phone.
moving backward and forward on the same road with no purpose.
Hang around places like chelasea cloisters, etc

All this being said, punter behaviour will be recognized by punters in the first place. All the other blokes /women will probably think you're just an idiot when glued to the phone or moving around on the same road without a purpose.

Offline Jeremy

The key thing to remember is random people are never paying attention to you as much as you think. Can you remember what any of the random people you passed today were doing or even looked like? Probably not.

The main thing that will make you stand out is acting nervous or suspicious. But luckily standing about staring at your phone isn't such unusual behaviour these days.

A year or so ago I went to a Chinese massage place, and as it was a reasonably busy street, I waited for a while. A gap appeared in the pedestrians, with just a girl walking up the street, glued to her phone. I went to the door, pushed, and it was locked!!!! The door was slightly loose, so made a loud bang. The girl, who by now was almost alongside, looked straight at me, then the place I was trying to get in.  Memo to me...Push doors gently!

The more you skulk about trying to be invisible, the more conspicuous you look. Use Google maps street view to familiarise yourself with the locale, work out how you will get there and if using a car where you'll park and then confidently stroll up. Nobody gives a fuck who you are or what you are doing. I find it hard to believe that every where you go is crawling with acquaintances..... if this really is the case then punt elsewhere.

Offline Grandslam

If I see someone walking around looking at their phone, my immediate thought isn't that they're on their way to a punt, so I doubt anyone pays any attention to me checking my phone as I make my way to the area whilst waiting for the door number.

That said, I usually check out the location on Google maps and find a café or pub where I'll wait. Not out of fear of being outed, but because I like to arrive 10 or 15 minutes early, relax and then confirm the exact address, rather than faffing about at the last minute.

I do imagine it's easier to blend in in London, but if people choose to live and punt in the suburbs then it really is their fault... :P

Yeah, except I'm still using a feature phone to punt with. Am I alone? It looks odd (to me) these days to see someone using one, particularly if they have a smartphone as well.
Time to upgrade methinks.

Offline londonpunter1

Your problem is you feel conspicuous because you know what you are doing. No one else cares.
As someone else said, I like to arrive early (I hate been late for anything, and if a WG keeps me waiting there is no chance of a repeat booking). Then I familiarise myself with the area so I know where to go when I get that call. I usually stand and wait at a local bus stop (no one should look out of place waiting for a bus!) or just walk round the block, unless someone else is ‘walking round the block’ you will only walk past them once (think about it)

At the time I was new to the area and didn't know that many people, but due to living and working here now, I know quite a lot of people in many different areas.

I just wanted advice on how to minimise my risks of being outed, that's all.

Previously I had visited places where it didn't matter, but life changes and now I would like minimum risk, so I'm choosing more carefully who to see and when/where.

Thanks. You've answered my question I think you can see why I was suspicious. It's seems simple to me, maybe that's what I don't get: just wear the clothes you normally wear, in some rough areas I have punted in a pair of "chav pants" and hoodie would be more appropriate, not my style and I would be comfortable wearing that besides I don't own a hoodie. You have two options: see girls outside your area or just have an excuse if you are in a place where people might recognise you, I don't know what you have to lose and I would ultimately think about it, if the worst is a few mates seeing you go in and out of a girl's council flat I wouldn't care less.

I've gone way past the whole paranoia thing about being noticeable when going to meet.

I probably look more shifty if I'm trying not to be noticed.

Had a punt recently in a pretty rough area but it was the middle of the day, had a few minutes to kill so walked around the block, three times. The only people who cottoned onto me were the plod who were also driving around the same block over and over again.

They did stop and ask what's going on to which I replied "I'm just waiting for someone to get ready and a short walk beats waiting around like a lemon" Nice and easy  :hi:

I always have my headphones in and listen to music. It's difficult when you meet someone at an apartment that has security chap sat near the entrance. Especially if she's a regular. But they never ask questions.

Nevertheless, headphones in, listen to music. Calms your nerves if you're a newbie and if someone asks you questions, you won't hear it anyway. Oh, and try to look like you know where you're going. Ask where the stairs when you call to tell her you've arrived if you don't know the place. Little things like that just help you get in quicker.

It’s a paranoia thing; because we are doing something which is socially unacceptable (in general) and because there is a stigma attached to punting (as well as the risk of being caught and outed) it is easy to think you stick out like a sore thumb. Quite simply, you don’t. And you won’t as long as you plan ahead. If the weather is warm wear a baseball cap, if cold then a woolly hat and if wet then a jacket with a hood. If you’re waiting then maybe spend 5 mins in the car, followed by a leisurely stroll with your hands in your pockets and on your phone so you can be aware of the “ready” text coming through without walking along staring at your phone. Once you are on your way, make sure you’ve checked out the area on Google maps so you recognise where you are and where you’re going. Look slightly past people near you, they will usually pass you by without a second glance or you could pretend to be on the phone. Don’t look around you, keep focused on where you need to go and there won’t be any problem.

My “worst” experience was when a couple of the girl’s next door neighbours decided to have a chat right outside her front door; she texted me to warn me and said she’d leave the door unlocked so all I had to do was walk by them with a 1000 yard stare and walk in - no problem at all. I can’t remember them and I’m sure they don’t remember me.
