Author Topic: Major Roadworks at end of M602 into Manchester  (Read 3260 times)

Went into Manchester today and noticed signs warning of major roadworks and delays on Regent Road by Sainsburys commencing end of August for 12 effing months!!!! That route is shit at best of times so be warned if you're driving into city centre from West...... add 2hrs travelling time or consider walking (probably quicker).

Online lewisjones23

Manchester is 2nd on my list of shit places to drive, closely followed by Birmingham

London is the actual worst though

If you are coming off the M60/M62, an alternative could be to drive into Eccles, park up there and get the tram outside Morrisons into the city centre, £3.20 return after 9.30am Monday to Friday, all day weekends and bank holidays, probably take half an hour.
Trams every 10 mins.

Yes, I wasn't aware either and it's handy to know even if not usually directly relevant for me. However, I'm almost certain he was just joking - hence the quotation marks and emoji. I actually quite enjoyed it.

This is probably a very good option. I certainly often find the trams to be rather convenient (although not always depending on the WG's location).

I agree, it's relevant on the nw board.

It's made a shit drive even worse

Offline CoreyTrevor

I couldn’t agree more that this is both relevant and useful information! There are a few very popular and well reviewed girls located right in that area. It’s already difficult to time a journey by car to that location, but this will make it impossible. Can a punting forum lobby a local Council?

Have to agree with most on here, horrendous to travel into manny at the best of times with or without road works, their fucking everywhere  the M6 is just the same, never any cunt working on them though, just miles and miles of cones

Offline Robert44

Thank you so much OP, that really is useful to know, particularly about the tram info.

Hmmm. I've hardly ever had a problem on that motorway stretch and I've used it *many* times. Always weekends or outside rush hour times, though. I've never used it for commuting.

Traffic advice is invaluable, so I'd appreciate it if this thread was kept up-to-date with the latest info.

Manchester is definitely bad for driving but Bury (once you're off the motorway) is one congested place to drive around. The roads are awful there. Ditto Warrington.

Offline kingsman2017

Main reason I hardly ever punt in the city despite having some of the well reviewed girls on here on my HL.

Driving that way for work next week so thanks for the update. Park and ride it is.

Is the west side of the M60 still a car park- are they still doing the "magic motorway" 4-lane conversion? I've not been that way for months now

Finished and running well, albeit school hols. We'll see if the millions they spent have made any difference in Sept.....speed limits need a bit of calibrating though.....

Damn, that means they'll be heading to the M6...........from memory the area between M56-M58 is due for conversion next

Junction 12 at Eccles (where M60/M62/M602 converge) to Junction 10 at Croft (where M62/M6 converge) is next on the hitlist to be "upgraded". At the moment the work on the M6 around Knutsford is set to last for another THREE years  :dash: :dash: :dash:

Offline Schuey

Highways North West spent £209 MILLION on the M60 upgrade...think of the punts they could have had with that!

Trafford park is gridlocked with the metrolink work. All of Manchester is a carpark. It's knowing the ratruns. Always approached central Manchester from cheetham hill road when there was the sink hole on the Mancunian way.

I tend to avoid city centres as I hate driving in them and the traffic can be horrendous at peak times, i'm currently punting most at GFE and LMB both in Bury (not sure if they are on the periphery though so not central) and haven't really had an issue with traffic.
I've found coming from Blackpool i'm better off going down the M65 for a few miles then going over the top of the moors using the minor roads then picking up the M66 rather than taking the full M61 and getting stuck on the M60 / M62 interchange, the miles or so from the M66 to the parlours can be a 5 minute queue but no big deal.

As for the M602 / Regent road i've sat in traffic more than once that has taken an extra hour, last time I needed to punt a girl around the Etihad stadium I went round the M60 and then headed inwards which seemed to be better

Offline sandy2000

BR, easier way to LMB & GFE is to go over the moors as you do but come off the A56 before the M66 starts, signed for Ramsbottom and non motorway traffic.

Turn left then follow the A56 to bury.

Just into Bury there is a parade of shops near a pelican crossing. At those lights turn left straight to LMB & GFE

I use the B6232 "Grane Road" which brings me onto the A56 for a mile or so before it turns into the M66 (basically follow the sat nav but I know my own way now). I may try another way some time when I have plenty of time to spare but looking at the map i'm not sure how using a minor A or B road would be quicker than the M66

Grane Rd has average speed cameras which have been nicking people for fun so be careful - also it's not a sensible option in crappy weather.

Yeah the average cameras have spoilt it a bit but often there's quite a bit of traffic all doing about the limit which tends to slow you down anyway.
Agreed it's not a good option when snowy, can remember a couple of winters back coming over the top when it started snowing and it was pretty slippery  :scare:

Roadworks don't kick off til end of month so notwithstanding the normal congestion you might be okay next week.

I use this every day joining at junction 18 - as you say its fine now because of school hols but they haven't added any extra capacity as the M60 bit isn't an "all lane running motorway" - they only did that on the M62. We've been crawling along at 50 MPH for four years while they were working on this and it was like a car park even when there wasn't a broken down vehicle. I really don't see how variable speed limits are going to help with the congestion.

I must admit that I do use the train whilst travelling to Manchester and if needed the bus or tram.I love to  have little nostalgic journeys around but I agree getting to Manchester by car and parking is often a  nightmare

It's actually faster to continue up the M65 to jct8 and then use the A56 to join the top end of the M66 than use the Graine Road especially now it has the Av Speed Cameras and the roadworks at the Rising Bridge roundabout are finished.

But if you're determined to try a shortcut try leaving the M65 at the same junction as the Graine Road but take the road over the top thru Guide then turn right at the Britannia and then either cut down to Rising Bridge or pick up the A56 at the same jct. as the Graine rd.

Traffic on the M66 is only ever an issue going towards Mcr for 30 minutes in a morning particularly if you're coming off at Bury and not going under the M62. But the fastest routes into Mcr city centre are definitely the ones that come off that stretch of the M60.

And even worse, there's now a lane out as you approach the Eccles interchange from Liverpool......God alone knows what it'll be like when schools go back.

Offline Dickled

I genuinely feel sorry for, not just fellow punters, but everybody faced with these seemingly never ending traffic works.
Fortunately I've retired recently, but before getting to work on the bus was an absolute fucking nightmare at times, trying to get out of Irlam, into Eccles and on to Manchester.
Before that, there were horrendous problems traversing the Crescent and Chapel Street area in Salford, again trying to get into Manchester.
You just know that when this present lot of traffic works are finished, they'll find another excuse to shed more misery on commuters.

Allow me to make a suggestion. The M60 between 12 and 15 needs resurfacing......the very bit they've just been working on...... :dash: :dash: :dash:
