My deepest condolences to you.

Oxford is a nice town and I have considered moving there myself but if it stays the same punting wise then there's absolutely no chance. As you say, it is a total desert. The few times I've been to Oxford (on business) I've usually not even bothered to have a punt (even though I searched thoroughly). One time I did though but it was with a girl who was on tour.
