The message has been there for a good few days now. Also, "phishing" scams for AW login details are nothing new. As far as I can see there's nothing to suggest a "breach".
I wouldn't trust AW with my card details though (both due to the risk of them being hacked and them being dodgy themselves). I'm fine with them knowing knowing my fake details and punting email address etc but that's it.
There's two issues: 1) whether AW can be 'trusted'; 2) whether AW will be hacked
1) If you only did business with companies that 'cared' about you, you wouldn't use the Internet much. Google sell your details to the government and use them themselves to target you with advertising. A vast number of websites clog your computer with cookies when they don't need to. There are scam report details going back years but the only reports are from a punter who paid money to a prossie direct and prossies who got their accounts suspended for breaking the rules. AW are a big well-known company. They are unlikely to steal money from you using your credit card. Everyone would know about it pretty quickly. Credit card details are more likely to be stolen by criminals using malware to target your computer or wifi as far as I know.
"Not trusting them to look after punters' interests" is not the same as "not trusting them with your credit card". And if you still don't want to use your credit card they more alternative ways of paying than most other companies.
2. Companies are hacked on more than a weekly basis. You can register your emails and get free reports of them being hacked. If you've had a hotmail or almost any email account for a while, chances are it's been hacked. If AW were hacked hackers would get your email and login details but it's very unlikely they'd get your credit card details. Since the most they can do with your login details (blackmail you to expose you for being abpunter) is not connected to your credit card it seems slightly panic mongering to say don't give them a tenner to buy photos and make RBs.
