I saw the story and thought exactly the same as the OP.

There is reportedly a similar one ('fatberg' is how it's described locally) in the sewer running between Hampstead Heath and Fleet Street that is essentially the River Fleet, hijacked in the 19th century to provide an underground main sewer for the inhabitants of much of what is now Camden. If you go onto YouTube I think it is actually pictured in one short film shot in that sewer.

It's reported to 250 metres long That'll keep Dyno-Rod busy for a while

Yes, my mistake, a spelling error/typo.

Correct spelling is Fatberg, like Iceberg. Not Fatburg, like some American town full of fat people.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to correct your spelling but just say that our one in Camden has the same name!

Apparently they have become so common, fatberg is the recognised name for them. I do not envy the guy that clears them out for a living  One of those unsung heroes.
