Could be wrong here but I suspect a Jew to wear a Star of David in the same way a Christian wears the crucifix would be verging on 'idols'

good quote PP, but I think that refers to images or statues of humans or animals like the Golden Calf or the Sphinx or Buddha or Virigin Mary.
I just have this distinct image of a jewel on a necklace from my first ever punt in 1962 with the lady wearing the star which I have seen very occasionally in social (not punting) life. It is of course the emblem of Israel and unfortunately what the Nazis made Jews wear.
