Thanks for that Islander. I know that I have a tendency to overpay, particularly in the early part of a trip. However I can't imagine that the kind of girl found on SA would be satisfied with $50 for 3 hours. Although a bit iffy on the outskirts and with some very dodgy soviet era architecture, Kiev is a handsome city. And remarkably good value for money for a European city. In fact, I'm sure that I read somewhere recently that it is the cheapest city in Europe which I can well believe. I am renting a spacious apartment which is close to the Maidan, the central square (actually more of a rectangle). Its the equivalent of being within spitting distance of Trafalgar Square. And its costing little more than 30 nicker a night! Remarkable. Eating out is similarly inexpensive and supermarkets make Lidl look like Fortnum & Masons! Great. More money for punting.

I'm getting used to the way Backpage operates now with all of its scams and dodgy practices and it has now become my main source. Apartments are easily available through Airbnb and lots of local sites (Google apartments in Kiev) and are better value than hotels. And no walk of shame.
