I work in and around the building trade and my hands at the end of the week are rough as sandpaper. This happens to coincide with punting activities and girls have commented negatively before. I've tried all manner of gloves and moisturisers but every weekend they're tough as shit. Anyone else have this problem? What is your remedy?

Try Kiehl's Creme de Corps. It's very expensive, but I know someone who has eczema on the legs and arms, and this has cured it.

I know your problem isn't eczema, but it may be worth a try, as it's much better quality than most moisturisers (which are mostly water). You can get a small bottle or tub to try it, without forking out too much cash.

You can get it in Liberty in London, or Space NK, there's a Kiehl's store in Westfield in London W12. Or get it online.

There's a range called creme de corps, but just get the basic body butter (which is yellow).

You could try going to a manicurist. A bit poncey I know but they sometimes use warmed oil, Paraffin wax I think.

They dip your hands in it and it's supposed to be far more absorbent as a moisturiser.

Not tried it myself so not really sure.

Ever tried using barrier creams while working? A lot of "builders hands" problems come from exposure to the lime in cement /mortar dust. Or dry plaster. If you can coat your hands with a decent barrier cream each morning before you start work, it might reduce the problem.
Also the obvious - wear protective gloves

I've recommended the plain Nivea Creme to clients with similar issues.

Depending on your home circumstances I'd suggest slathering it on your hands then putting a pair of gloves on for a while to help it soak in

Mix some oatmeal and honey to make an exfoliation paste to clean your hands and remove dead skin.

Use this after External Link/Members Only or underneath gloves while you're working.

I bought some shite sandpaper from b&q last week to do my floor. After one board the sandpaper is smooth as. If you want you can come over and rub my floor down and your hands will be baby smooth

Just a suggestion. I won't even charge you

I don't know if this is a remedy but the way I look at it too much of one thing is bad.  Wear no gloves all day your hands get messed up wear sweaty gloves all day your hands get messed up.  Let your hands breath as much as you can but wear the gloves only when you really need them.  Make sure the gloves are clean, hope this helps.

The other thing is you are the customer as long as your hands are clean, I don't think a WG can make too much fuss.  There's going to be sex workers out there that find big rough hands a turn on, I wouldn't worry too much.

know what you mean i find this one works good from screwfix no puns intended. :D

+1 for Neutrogena.  You have to wear gloves on lots of building sites nowadays - cement dermatitis can be nasty.

E45 cream works well, and isn't dear. Also fixes cold weather splits next to fingernails overnight.

Aveeno cream works wonders. It has been known to do wonderful things with skin, including conditions such as Eczema.

If you have a Costco membership you can pick up 3 for about a £5.

You really should look in to it. Try using gloves at work.

Cetraben available from boots. Prescribed by docs for problematic dry skin. Very good. Again I will echo put loads on with gloves, ideally at night in bed. Cheers

From an old salty seadog, the noggies seem to have got it right here.  When working in cold conditions with salt water, hydraulic fluid and then washing twice hands a day with aggresive degreasers, a quick rub of nutrogena before bed certainly works, the skin stays thick and the calouses remain, which are essential to keep hands from getting shredded, but the skin stay supple and moist.

This stuff worked for me.

I helped do up a mates house  and suffered from really dry knuckles for about a month afterwards. The only thing that helped was "o'keeffe workers hand cream " it comes in a small green tub.  I used it once a night and it really helped!

I wear latex disposable gloves under my builders gloves. If I'm handling a lot of sand/cement I'll moisturise my hands before putting latex gloves on. Body Shop Hemp Hand Cream is very thick heavy duty stuff and works well for me.

Offline hungrypunt

Prevent it at the start. Barrier cream, and gloves.
I used to work with cement/plaster a lot and thats the only thing. Its designed to suck out moisture so when it comes in contact with the skin it sucks out all the oils and the chemicals damage too, .
In this instance prevention is defo better than trying to cure.

I work in the building game and my hands are rough, Like sandpaper. I tried creams but they don't really work unless using them for prolonged periods and giving your hands a break from your daily routine

but in short term and for best results there's nothing more natural than using your own cream. Does wonders
