Im looking for hotels in the Durham and Newcastle area that have an external or discrete key drop facility. Just for booking out for a few hours during the day.  Any suggestons?

Not sure whether discreet but travelodge have a key drop. I'd have a look at the hotel next to washington services (halfway between Durham and Newcastle) as this has previously been documented as seeing a little more action than most.

I think Sleeperz near newcastle central station do booking by the hour.

If you go to premier inns you get a keycard and you can simply leave it in the room when you leave.

Is this the same with Travelodge as they just issue keycards also?

Both premiere inns and travelodges are chains that use basic swipe or rfid cards which are fairly disposable. Hand it back and it gets erased and reused, don't hand it back in and nothing happens

If you actually only want the room for a few hours and don't want the embarrassment of checking out without staying the night then pay at first and walk out when you leave

I regularly leave these types of chains with never formally checking out, it allows me to walk back in anytime if I forget anything until checkout time

It just means they don't know for sure that I have left which only affects cleaning the room and they are missing a disposable card
