I was largely unaware of the Blackpool scene..!
"Scene" is the wrong word. Underworld is a better description. With Blackpool being one of the most deprived parts of the country there's a whole cadre of unemployed - and unemployable - women and girls knocking around, ripe for exploitation. A few you see on AW, a few on PTMU and similar, but most are working below the radar, hanging around the street corners and bars and entertainment complexes. A lot of young girls hang around the takeaways looking for business - in some cases in the past they've been pimped out by the kabab shop owners. At least one such underage girl vanished - amid much speculation as to how she was disposed.
Some of the girls migrate toward mainstream - like the ones who work for a while in that brothel on Central Drive, but few last there for long. Natalie's "sauna" at the centre of this story is another point to which they congregate. Its a deathtrap, I went there once a couple of years ago, there were exposed electric wires powering the lights, the water had been turned off, the floorboards felt like the joists had rotted through, there was rat shit on the floor and fleas on the bed. Heating was by a single bottled gas fire for the whole building, but "the boss" had refused by buy a replacement bottle because the girls hadn't work hard enough in the previous week.
The women themselves gave every impression of being biological health hazards. Smelly, sweaty, unwashed with obvious skin complaints.
What makes the situation worse is that these women come to Blackpool thinking they'll earn a fortune in the whorehouses, but the truth is that outside the holiday season there is very little money to be made from sex in the town. Speak to any of the girls or managers at the Thai parlours and it becomes clear they are lucky if they get three people through the door in a day. That's not three per girl, but three in total. I know a couple of Romanian girls who tried to make it work, but they struggled to make enough to pay the rent, let alone heat the flat or eat.
In short, Blackpool is a shithole of a town with large numbers of desperates, many underage who will do anything to try to make money. And the local police don't seem to give a shit.
