They are looking to employ the over 50s in a recruitment drive, maybe they can work as hard as a youngster?I prefer being served by older people in shops even if they are slower.

B&Q and Sainsbury have been doing this for years, nothing new.

A friends mother worked in Sainsbury until she was 95 or 6, if you asked her what she did.

" I help the old people with their shopping "

As a radio caller  said “the retired can do an early shift after walking the dogs and the youngsters do the late shift in the evening “ it’s tiring work in McDonald’s apparently.

One of the reasons for doing this is that, in general, older people are more reliable as employees - more likely to turn up, not be hung over, be more conscientious etc. As others said, some employers have been doing it for years.

I will say, from experience,  they do a lot of good and there is incentives if you want to work.

My Scottish Nephew was a mess when leaving school, bullied, confused about his sexuality and getting into drugs, which is not difficult in Scotland. Drinking heavily too.

He had no idea for a career, avoided college for the same reasons school did him no good, a job in Mcd,s , part time at first, has turned him around completely in a way nobody could have imagined.

That's the sort of story that cheers me up. Shame about the food - but different strokes.

Funnily enough, I am in a McDonald's at this very moment. At least two of the staff are the wrong side of fifty. I agree with your comment about being served by older staff.

The only downside is going home every day smelling of burgers  :dash:

I've worked in a Mcd when I was a teenager. It was agreed that you gave your mates free burger / shakes. You used to get free stuff in other branches. Later when I was (much) older I found women their quite easy to pick up going in several times a day building up a repartee.
I've also found that in some RLD's like near Reading West Station, Slough, Streatham, Brixton, Kings Cross, Bristol etc the SP's would hang out there nursing a coffee for an hour.

I doubt if over 50s would give me free stuff or let me chat them up into a BJ

Yep, McDonald's has some undercover freaks I heard and attractive women working there. I used to flirt with a girl one in square mile. Unfortunately the shop closed, never got her number. But as you can imagine a city worker chatting them up would be a confidence booster, I see many over 40s working in my local Maccies and I'd give them one too.

One SP that I saw on a few occasions quit to go and work in a McD's. If she's still there she'll be pushing 50 now.

Being one of a team made all the difference and gave him confidence he could only get from working with others, instead of pretend friends getting him hooked.
It took 3 days, for him to be dragged to work, to offering to do more shifts and flying out the door on time, remarkable really.

I watched deliveroo  walking into the toilets with the brown bags of food,I can’t understand why people want cold burgers delivered by Eastern European’s.

Mentioned it before, it is barely warm if you eat it in, returned my last order as it was stone cold, in store  :D

WTF is it like once delivered?

Maybe I'm being overly cynical here, but employing over 50s may help keep wages down as a lot of them are doing it for something to do and top up the pension pot, rather than actually make a living?

These places have fixed wage scales, everyone gets the same at the same level, the days of negotiating your own pay is long gone for these types of chain places and supermarkets.

as lillythesave said they have fixed pay scales. Its far more for the reason i gave above ie

Seems like a nice policy. Positive discrimination that doesn’t rule against people with better skills.  :hi:

I believe Aldi also have a policy of hiring incredibly fat ugly people.
 :hi:

But personally I shop at Tescos. More expensive. Less fat ugly people but that’s not why I shop there. I like their brands. The snottily superior “Tescos finest”. Guaranteed not to have gone off by the time you get home. And less fat ugly people. (Just kidding).

But isn’t it unfair to students? All those sexy young beautiful undergrads, toiling long hours, hardly affording a heavy drinking session, having to use food banks even, wearing tight fitting clothing cos they can’t afford new stuff.

Maybe a policy of “under 21 or over 60” would please everyone.

I used to shop at Tesco all the time, the finest range really is not that good in general , stopped for a few reasons, one of which was discovering the chicken being washed and repackaged by that dodgy processor was sale or return from Lidl, and destined for Tesco.

Tesco have long used buying power to dictate the price they pay to farmers and processers, competition in the market may have changed that somewhat, another reason I will not use them is the Aldi price match, basically saying we have mugged you for years  :D

Lidl and Aldi have also forced Tesco to pay a living wage, they really are not so great if you look into them. The amount of food they were dumping instead of sending to needy causes, exposed by activists, should not have needed others to force them into it.

Yes, indeed they’re evil Lili (Willie thinks otherwise). However the floors are washed, which only happens in Lidl with the biggest stores.  :D

Seriously though, like Amazon, Tescos have made ethical improvements in response to bad publicity. That’s evident in the store. Lots of virtue-signalling stuff but with added tangible benefits. And personally I think staff are a lot happier than those working under Lidl. You may disagree of course Lily( you usually do  ;) ).
