Yes i've been telling people for years that peanuts aren't nuts and mainly getting the reaction of "Fuck off" or "So why are they called nuts then".

I knew that peanuts aren't nuts, but in the American South they were called "Goober peas", so I imagined they grew in a similar way to normal peas!

On the subject of peanuts, if you ever get one stuck in your ear the best way to get it out is to pour some chocolate down your ear and it will come out a treat

I was surprised to discover
1) that having a criminal conviction is not a bar to being a policeman in UK
2) there is apparently no centrally stored total for the numbers of serving police with criminal records
3) the Met has 266 serving officers with criminal records
4) between 2018 and 2023 over 150 serving Met officers were convicted and 66 were in the process of being prosecuted

I wasnt surprised that most Met Officers convicted either resigned or were dismissed  but I was absolutely astonished that one officer convicted of burglary was given a final written warning !

Ruth Ellis, the last woman to face the death penalty in England has had a pardon granted to her by KC3, this does not mean she is innocent of the crime, but it replaces the death penalty with life imprisonment.

I’m still trying to get my head round it.

I believe the family may have been putting pressure on, there was a comment about her being a victim of domestic violence which wasn't treated in the same way back then

But unless it’s a full pardon, saying she was not guilty of the crime ( which is not the case) - what is the point of this ?

Presumably to recognise the impact of domestic violence on her mental health and actions, and to give a nod that it would have been a mitigating factor if the case had come to trial 70 years later. Her family say the are greatly comforted by this result.

But how many 1000's of other cases are also worthy of a review given how the modern way of living and "Morals" etc are drastically different  :unknown:

It basically boils down to the fact that most families just want to forget about it rather than start some sort of campaign plus hers was particularly high profile and did end in changing the law on capital punishment

In the late Terry Pratchetts "Discworld" series, the two noble families in the City ( who hate each other) are the Selachii and the Venturi.

"Selachii" is the biological taxonomic subdivision for Sharks
" Venturi" is a physics concept which accelerates fluids or gasses  - i.e. Jets

Sharks vs Jets indeed.....

They've been trying to buy Hugo Boss too.

They already own almost 30% of Hugo Boss, under German law once their shareholding reaches 30% they’re required to submit a bid for the whole company. I imagine that this will rumble on for a while yet.

It’s almost more economical to buy a new electric toothbrush than to buy a replacement brush head, ie £17 for two new brushes for a £25 Oral B. In the end I spent £29 on a new Philips sensonic which seems to do a much better job than the old one.

Same with printers as they hope to sting you on the ink cartridges

A salesman made slightly inflated claims to my 38 yr old daughter - when she asked my opinion I said "well he would say that wouldnt he"
She had heard the phrase before but didnt know why it became famous
Most of the older members here will  instantly recognise Mandy Rice Davies famous rebuke to a high court judge during the Profumo Affair

What I didnt know was this
John Profumo, 5th Baron Profumo of the Kingdom of Sardinia, while still serving in the army was elected  to the House of Commons in March 1940 however, the Speaker of the House of Commons and then the Foreign Office refused to allow Profumo to use the title Although elected as a Conservative in May he voted against the Chamberlain government in the debate following the British defeat at Narvik in Norway. Leading to the Churchill replacing Chamberlain as PM

This defiance on Profumo's part enraged the Chief Whip, David Margesson, who said to him "I can tell you this, you utterly contemptible little shit. On every morning that you wake up for the rest of your life you will be ashamed of what you did last night."

Profumo later remarked that Margesson "couldn't have been more wrong"

this would be very short sighted if it happens considering the focus on prostate cancer recently. I know results aren't full proof but a good indicator. Can't imagine why they would do this? I've got mine booked for September so should get it in this year

If they put rubbish in without your permission it's fly tipping and illegal. As the skip hirer you are responsible for the waste that goes in it and if anything dodgy goes in it comes back on you.

I've dealt with a few skip companies over the years, some are stricter than others. I've got a permanent hire at the moment, I just call them when it's full to get it swapped. It's hired as general waste (new house building).

Some of them are really strict about what goes in, even if you book it as "general waste", there are strict environmental rules about what can go in it.

If you've booked it as building waste, rubble, bricks, tiles etc, best not to put anything else in it. That is usually recycled in to type 1 MOT. You could face a charge back for contamination.

Best to check what the T&C's are if you're gonna let anyone else put stuff in it.

Aye there's some funny regulations regarding waste, we've got a commercial wheelybin at work and they're fussy about what we put in, the lorry that empties it has a camera recording it being emptied so they can trace any contaminates.

Loads of people seem to think any skip is a free for all.
