It's normal to leave the room to put the cash into your safe place . It's not done out of them not trusting you as such but out of not trusting the situation of having it just left out , saves any confusion . I've always done it this way

I've never had a problem with that and I've always understood why. Of course it does leave the very obvious issue of what is the service is utterly crap... much easier to negotiate a refund if the money is on the bedside table.
