The Government class them as a "legal high" ------------- a blanket ban was supposed to take effect on 6th April, looks like it has been put on hold.

Poppers were originally amyl nitrite, but that's now available only as a regulated medicine.

Next came butyl nitrite, which was outlawed in 2006.

This has left us with the rather rubbish isopropyl nitrite that you buy nowadays.  Little effect, but make you feel like crap afterwards.  And, particularly gallingly, the eyesight risks are associated with isopropyl nitrite, rather than its predecessors.

Poppers were to be included in the ban on legal highs, but were excluded after some strong campaigning.

Just a shame that we're stuck with the crap that is sold in the UK...

Not just gay guys, though.  I enjoy some anal play on me, and poppers make it more fun.  They also loosen inhibitions and make everything more "slutty" (the only word that really sums it up for me).

I also rather enjoy some popper-sniffing coming up to the point of no return - everything becomes a bit dreamlike, yet intensified.  The only risk is that the very vasodilation that makes them do what they do also can be a bit of an erection killer.  So some good timing and instinct is required....

It's amyl, not amyil or amly. But these are mere typos. More importantly, it's nitrite not nitrate. Amyl nitrate is a completely different chemical which is available but is not a vasodilator (popper).

Steptoe's warning about the risk of using poppers and ED medication together cannot be over-emphasised. Not fair to leave an SP with a cadaver on her hands !

One of the problems with both the proposed and enacted legislation seemed to be defining which things were included. The reports on poppers show several different ingredients in different poppers. Isopropyl nitrite was it seems associated with damage to the eyes in some cases.

I agree most important is don’t mix poppers with vasodilators such as viagra. Poppers have the effect of not making you stiff but mixed with viagra you could be permanently stiff and not in a good way!

Thanks KL, didn't know that. If it's added to the commercial fuel sold at the pumps then it's no wonder diesel engines emit nitrogen oxides.  But the online literature, such as it is, seems to imply it's primarily an additive for model engine fuel.

Also, there is much confusion on nomenclature in this literature ; failure to distinguish between nitrite and nitrate seems endemic.
