Author Topic: Mobile Phone Usage Abroad  (Read 904 times)

Offline ohdanny

Hello,

I'm considering a trip abroad, probably Germany or Czech Republic.   Does anyone know what the situation is with mobile phones abroad.  Would my location be discernable, i.e. dial tone, unavailable messages etc?

Thanks a lot!

If you want to use your phone abroad you'll likely have to call your service provider & ask them to activate this service. I'm on 3 & when I went to Australia a few years back I assumed my phone would work, it didn't & had to rely on emails & mates phones to relay info back home as required.

I would however recommend turning off international roaming when abroad as this will cost you a fortune to have your phone looking for 3G signal. Most hotels have wireless so use that if you need to go online. I was recently in prague & our appartments there had it, as did hotels on recent trips to Budapest, Berlin, Barcelona & USA.

Ensure your phone is unlocked and use a local SIM card. Always the cheapest option. I travel around Europe with my work and always purchase a local SIM card.

Thanks Guys for the info.  What I really would like to understand is would my family be aware that I was outside the UK through the ringing tone or unavailable message from the network?

Thanks

Exactly what I do, just come back from Thailand and Bali, did exactly that, bought a local SIM and used that with my unlocked iPhone 4S, set up on 3G or used wifi. I never use my UK sim abroad, as the costs are a rip off!

I often take my normal phone for incoming calls from the UK and for smartphone wifi use in the hotel or apartment if available. Then a cheap old unlocked phone with no commercial value for use outside in dodgy areas using a local sim for local calls.

Yes, when someone from the UK calls your UK number when roaming overseas it will be noticeable as there will be a long pause to connect while your call is routed. Depending on your operator and the routing they buy.
Also your call tone might be a different volume in the callers ear piece when it's connected and calling you though if in the EU the carrier routing is quite quick and the hop between in landing stations between Lowestoft and mainland Europe is short.

If you are in Europe the ringing tone would be different to the caller. The European one is a long single tone repeated whereas the UK one is a ring ring type tone
