That he was cleared seems very odd, given the evidence as I understand it from the Telegraph write-up. He knew beforehand that at least one of them still went to school, and didn't ask for any photographic ID. So I'm struggling to see how reasonable his belief that they were over 16 can have been. No doubt his lawyers were the best money can buy, but equally it doesn't sound as though the jury had too much sympathy for the two girls either. Obviously I wasn't sitting in the courtroom and didn't hear all the evidence, but my hunch is that I'd have found it difficult to acquit based on what (little?) I know.

I don't think Doug Richards will encounter any have a go hero's or be encumbered by this event in any way simply because he has the money and lawyers to back up this verdict.  If any news/media outlet or individual suggests otherwise, I'm sure he'll have good reason to sue.

What I don't understand about this is that his defence was that he believed them to be 16 and 17, however that would still have been just as illegal anyway. So he basically was admitting to the offence, just disputing the exact ages; how on earth was that a successful defence? He admitted he believed he was paying someone under 18 for sex, yet got off.
