We've had many threads on this but it's like safe sex, you have to find out what is appropriate for you: there's no simple rule for everyone (although a cheap separate phone for punting is usually good advice for most newbies).
Smartphones leak like a pox-infected fanny, but there are many security tricks and strategies that can be used as well as 'punter-friendly' apps. Smartphones can store info securely but very badly without precautions. They are also useful for mapping, finding your way there and back, checking her profile and 'plan b' options, hiding photos or a shitload of other useful stuff. That also makes them a bigger liability (plus they're more expensive to replace).
Most newbies that get into trouble have probably been tempted to let the blood run from brain to cock in anticipation too much. You need to think cold and hard first.
Who do I want to protect information from? (Wife, partner, family, casual onlookers, police if you were kerbcrawling)
How difficult is it to protect? (More protection = more hassle)
What are the consequences if someone gets it that shouldn't? (eg, google doesn't care, your mates might rib you, but your wifey-cow would make life hell)
What's a sensible security-freedom tradeoff?
If you want total security, don't punt, don't make phone calls, don't use the internet.
If you 'have nothing to hide' and don't care who knows, then what exactly are you being paranoid about?
For newbies, or experienced punters in a new environment, such as some developing country shithole, the general rule is start with maximum security until you find your way around; then adjust as seems reasonable. fwiw.
