I think it is just small talk and wg probably thinks it is better than awkward silence. I don't care what they ask me and for most of it I stick with "facts" about my alternative persona. I never wear a Rolex on a punt, but I do talk a lot of Bolex
I doubt there is anything sinister in her questions and I'll bet if I met her next day she would not remember my replies.
You're quite right about their likely intentions and the easiest way to get past the questions.I tend to get this most with EEs and when I try to politely avoid the questions some of them don't understand me and keep pushing due to their poor English - I punt in the Birmingham area which is EE dominated at present.
I am not as bothered by it as my original post indicated, there was an element of dramatic effect in that.I do still think the questions I mentioned are ill considered choices for the situation , although obvious ones for someone struggling for conversation and still better than a stony silence. The Wife / Girlfriend one often comes across as judgmental when said in a slightly severe EE voice !
With some EEs the most painful conversation has actually happened when I have initiated it on a topic they are not familiar with - about five rewordings of the same trivial quip or question followed by me saying " It does not matter . " and wishing I had kept quiet. There are some very good EEs but maybe communication is best done by body language , smiles and only very basic conversation !
I find conversation much better with English girls as it flows much more comfortably , I do not have to be so careful of my wording as they understand the nuances of the language, and banter is easier.I do usually manage to develop some rapport in EE bookings but it can be hard work and slightly subdue me for the rest of the punt.
