Author Topic: The Sex Industry is Repulsive  (Read 2318 times)

Brooke Magnanti, aka Belle de Jour, who claims she was a £300 an hour (about £400 an hour in today's money) prostitute in London in 1999-2000 (though nobody has actually come forward to claim they punted with her), writes:

Quote
Magnanti looks on the sex industry with the warm eyes of an advocate. She seems fixated on the financial benefits of prostitution rather than the emotional cost, and believes that the right to sell your body should stand alongside other rights,

Prossienet gets several mentions:

Quote
The study Beyond Gender: An Examination of Exploitation in Sex Work turns, she says, "almost everything we think we know about sex work on its head", even if you have visited auto-censored, the online directory of prostitutes, and gagged at the story that tells.

and

Quote
greasy hell of auto-censored.

You can tell the writer has a prim bourgeoisie life when she says:

Quote
The truth that prostitution may be the best economic choice for some women is repulsive,

Just to clarify - the quotes are not from Brooke Magnanti but from Tanya Gold an embittered feminist who has reviewed her book

Interesting links, though the op has unfortunately and unintentionally mixed them up a bit.

In summary:

Brooke Magnanti is an ex- sex-worker turned academic (scientist) who is largely pro-escorts (and with responsible data to back up her case) but who can perhaps overstate her case when it comes to pornography and feminism (subjects about which she appears to know considerably less). She's not a social scientist or sociologist so has no academic background to support her analysis of the sex industry but writes about it as an intelligent and educated woman.

Tanya Gold looks like a fat blob of a woman, an ex-alcoholic, who nevertheless can write eye-catching articles. Her podiums include being anti-prostitutes and anti-academics.

Catherine Hakim, who reviews Magnati's book (mostly positively) in the link from the newspaper article, is a prominent sociologist who looks like she knows what she's talking about.

Johnny Rotten is an ex-member of 70s punk band the Sex Pistols. I have no excuse for introducing his name on this thread.

Could do with some photoshop there. Her smile reminds me of The Joker from the Batman movies.

While we're on the 'people' list :

Suzi Godson seems like a sensible, responsible journalist who also reviews Magnanti's book positively (for the Times). Interestingly perhaps, Hakim, Godson and Magnanti are quite attractive looking women. They don't feel threatened by prostitutes it seems. If they didn't earn their own living they could probably find healthy specimens as husband-slaves. But they choose to be women in the fuller sense of the word. Tanya Gold would appear to lose out there!

A load of shite here from the Evening Standard, demeaning Dr Magnanti's credibility...

She only appears to have 2 tits - I thought pigs had 8.

Our society's bizarre view of sex is amply demonstrated by the number of public figures that get hot under collar about exploited sex workers, but do not care a monkeys about exploited factory and farm workers.

How does any fair minded individual convince themselves that ALL sex workers are doing it against their will? Or that sex for pay is inherently evil, while paying people to go abroad to shoot other people is deeply noble?

Offline hunnieme

TBH I think the OP is a little unfair on Gold. Sure the quotes he's taken are all in there but the article is more balanced than those quotes suggest.

In any case, The Guardian/Observer did review the book fairly positively here : http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2012/apr/15/sex-myth-wrong-brooke-magnanti-review

Indeed, they are fucking hypocrites so i have no respect for them and do as suits me rather than listen to these cunts. They can shove their "do as i say, not as i do" shit up their arses. ;)
