Author Topic: Getting tested anonymously at a Manchester GUM clinic  (Read 1759 times)

I've been tested at a GUM clinic a couple of times. The first time I gave my real details, and then didn't have the bottle to give them my full sexual history (not the sort of thing to be recorded for posterity). It kind of defeated the object because they do a risk assessment and test accordingly.

More recently, I decided I better be honest about the sex, but not so honest about who I was.

When I phoned the GUM clinic, I asked if I could do it anonymously and they said they needed certain information for the system but I was welcome to make it up.

So, they need (and you need to be prepared to make these up and remember them):
a) A name and surname
b) A date of birth
c) A postcode (for primary healthcare charging purposes)
d) A mobile telephone number - punting phone comes in handy

You don't need to give your GP details or a full address.

At the clinic, they asked my sexual history, who I had recently had sex with, whether I had anal or not etc, and whether it was paid for and at a parlour (as opposed to street workers presumably), and whether I used condoms. The nurse went chronologically through my partners until she got the idea that I was a filthy fucker who definitely needed testing. They do a urine test (for gonorrhoea and chlamydia) and in my case decided to do a blood test for hepatitis and HIV and syphilis. There was no swabbing or visual inspection as I was not showing any symptoms. I asked about the risk from reverse oral and they said this was negligible and not tested specifically for. The nurse also gave me some information on PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) against HIV in case of a condom split. She offered me some condoms, I declined saying the prossies provided their own.

They gave me a card with a number on so I could access the automated results service (and you'll need the made up date of birth as well). In fact due to underfunding, they are slow in uploading negative (healthy) test results to the system and I had to call the clinic after three weeks to get the all clear.

I'll be more inclined to get tested regularly now. The nurse recommended every three to six months.

Cheers

Was it the one connected to the infirmary?

Hi cato

For those that aren't aware, by infirmary you are referring to the External Link/Members Only on Upper Brook Street in Manchester.

I went to the External Link/Members Only one. If anybody has a different experience at the infirmary (or the External Link/Members Only clinic) can you write it up?

Cheers

I went to the one on Upper Brook street and it was much as you describe but they didn't give me a card. They sent me a text after about a week saying 'all clear'
