As one of the world’s most respected organs of reporting and opinion, the
Times newspaper is, as would be expected, devoting much attention to the two biggest international issues of the day – namely, the potential extinction of the human race at the hands of AI, and Sydney Sweeney’s breasts.
I therefore find it surprising that UKP – arguably the second most respected world outlet for fact and opinion – while giving proper prominence to the AI threat, has been ignoring Breastgate. Perhaps out of prudishness, for which the site is sadly notorious.
For those not fully up to speed on Sydney’s breasts, yesterday’s main section of the
Times carried a lengthy report (on page 3!), helpfully appending no fewer than three of the offending photographs in order to ensure that the paper’s readers were able to examine the issue in full detail.
The report begins:
Sydney Sweeney, the actress, has been accused of “obliterating” the reputation of women’s sport in a nude advertising campaign.
The campaign to promote the US betting company Novig shows Sweeney, best known for the television series Euphoria, in various states of undress with strategically placed sporting equipment.
Amy Hunt, the British sprinter who made history by winning four gold medals at a single European Championships this summer, was among female athletes who accused Sweeney of undermining years of work.
At the World Athletics Ultimate Championships on Sunday, Hunt said on the BBC: “Sydney Sweeney, this is what women in sport looks like … muscles, hard work, sweat, blood, tears.”I've written admiringly of Hunt on another thread, but I do think this is all a bit silly. Women’s athletics appeals to one demographic, Sweeney's breasts to another. I don’t think there is much overlap. (Except, to be fair, in some of the photographs...)
Meanwhile, yesterday’s
Times 2 carried an analysis of the issue by Harriet Walker, under the heading, “Nipples, now nudes: has Sydney Sweeney gone too far this time?”
I regret to report that Ms Walker gave Sweeney's breasts the thumbs-down.
Me? Cautious approval, I think.
