'Track defect found near derailment site - report'

The RAIB, which is continuing to investigate the derailment, said it had received "several reports of rough riding at the location of the derailment from passengers on other trains".

The continuing investigation will now consider elements including how that section of track was inspected and maintained, the condition and maintenance of the embankment, the weather conditions and how effective any hot weather mitigation measures were.'

But not, it seems, why the fuck the 'reports of rough riding' weren't specifically investigated.

As I recall this isn't the first time that reports of rough riding weren't investigated properly. The fatal 97 mph crash at Potters Bar in 2002 comes to mind.

Furthermore it would have been of general public interest if the reporter had given an update on the condition of the two seriously injured passengers

Footnote

It is now reported in the Times that the dislocated rails were filmed two hours before the crash.

My reading of the BBC article was that the reports of rough riding were a bit 'me too' and after the event.

Unless you want to spend a lot of tokens having CCTV continuously analysed by AI in near real-time, it will only be useful for evidence after something happens that justifies getting it out and looking at it.  Same for most CCTV beyond feeds to a multi-screen security guard office on a site that's guarded.

You wouldnt normally notice that track wobble, well from the position you were in the driving cab, and most of the time your looking where the the signals are rather than the track as such.

On the east coast main line near the Digswell viaduct there was a right old wobble that was that way for a rather long time. Still we'll see what the RIAB report says.

I reckcon that some work was needed there or was to be done to the underlying track support ground .
