I don’t follow running races – the Olympics is almost as much of a snooze-fest as the football World Cup – but last night on
The Wrap Annabel Denham of the
Telegraph and Stephen Bush of the
Pink ‘Un chatted for a few minutes about a young woman called Amy Hunt (of whom I had not previously heard), whom they spoke of as not only a high achiever but also very personable.
The reason they were talking about Amy was that she had just won the gold medal in the 100 metres, 200 metres, 4 × 100 metres relay, and 4 x 100 metres mixed relay at the 2026 European Championships – becoming the first athlete to win four gold medals at a single European Championships.
Not bad going. I sought out an interview with Amy:
External Link/Members OnlyWhat an impressive young woman! Intelligent, charismatic, articulate, and extraordinarily focused on further achievement. As well as being a pretty decent runner, she is a graduate from Cambridge University in English Literature, so she has brains as well as brawn. (And indeed her success is a welcome boost to an institution whose reputation has taken a bit of a hit following the Jason Arday debacle / scandal / tragedy, and indeed the appointment of another, much less impressive, Cambridge English Literature graduate as Prime Minister.)
Some of us – including me – spend a lot of time lamenting the state of the nation (though, to be fair, there is quite a lot to lament). However when there is too much focus on a nation’s failings there is a danger of this becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy.
While there are young women like Amy Hunt in Britain, all is not lost! Time to accentuate the positive!
