Apologies to fans of the West Wing.

Thoughts, UKP?

Nice to see they are finally introducing this feature.

Interesting...from a SP point of view, if or when this comes though. I won't be using Whatsapp for business. Numbers are used screening purposes. I can see how it would look appealing for punters.

I was able to ‘reserve’ a nickname earlier this evening, through the app.

It's a bogus feature given you can already conceal your number from non-contacts.  You can already choose a display name so the only reason for this is to increase anonymity which will be used for malign purposes.  Makes vulnerable users worse off.

All they needed to do was prevent whatsapp groups exposing phone numbers by default (it should be impossible for group admins overiding privacy choices of individual members) and just show display names (joining group should allow member to choose a display name for group).  The only spam I've received as a result of WA activity is a-holes capturing my exposed number from a group supposedly offering data analytics training.

As the article points out Meta is in the business of being the worst invader of privacy for corporate gain.

In the context of this hobby, agree with Emma, this makes things less safe for SPs which is worse for the industry because it enables more crimes against them, which will increase pressure by anti-prostitution lobbyists to make the whole game illegal under their false pretense of protecting vulnerable women.

Haven't twigged the WW reference, guess it's a play on an episode title.  Gives me something to watch in a dearth of decent contemporary programming that isn't Korean or Japanese derived.  7 seasons, 22+ eps a piece, thanks Sparkus... The binge may have my regs calling to demand where I'm at... 50:50 they put on a good performance to prevent my future intransigence.

So it seems you can't not choose to use your WhatsApp name and continue to show your number instead.  There'd better still be a way for it.  The hypocrisy that in the interests of "privacy" they offer you the option to link to your IG or Facebook  :dash:

Perhaps the SPs need to move their clients to Signal or Line (maybe not Telegram) ? :unknown:

After curious research: Not sure which other app would be any better as it seems many of the messaging apps are using names now e.g. Signal and Line.  Best to avoid Telegram perhaps...
Just regular sms but then many girls and punters don't have unlimited plans.  Sending pics could also be a pain as they might be sent as expensive mms rather than by cheaper data if RCS on Android and whatever Apple does don't cross-communicate cost effectively.  :unknown:

Those in the know please correct me.

I'll probably just stick to AW and text. Whatsapp has been driving me up the wall as it with unwanted dick pics and disappearing messages....this would just be the icy on the cake.

The issue with disappearing messages is I find it much easier to book people in if I know what previous conversations were and if they've booked before.

Anyone that uses disappearing messages will raise suspicions. A bit of a red flag, especially for new people.

I imagine most SPs will just stick to AW and text like you, if it ain't broke why fix it? It works, no need for anything else

Think I'll stick to writing letters.

You remind me of the days of contact mags; break out the Basildon Bond, put a new cartridge in the fountain pen and write a letter to an SP in an attempt to book an appointment, then go down to the post office to buy a stamp and post the letter.

You can turn off the disappearing messages from your side for your copies.  You can also export while conversations for lasting record outside whatsapp.

This is true however there is nothing stopping punters turning it back on and then it becomes a vicious cycle. I found more and more people using it and it doesn't matter how many times I try to ask them to just delete the whole conversation they're end so my messages stay.

A busy SP wants everything in one place, easily accessed, and many punters do seem to expect this too.

Pretty sure that first bit isn't right. You can't turn disappearing messages off just for your own copies. In a one-to-one chat it's not a per-person setting, so if you switch it off it goes off for both of you, and they get a little notification in the chat telling them you did it. There's no quiet one-sided version where it keeps vanishing for them but sticks around for you.

The export point is spot on though. You can export the chat out to email or another app and that gives you a lasting record outside WhatsApp, no timer, and it doesn't alert them. Only thing to watch is that it only grabs what's still in the chat when you export, so you'd want to do it before anything disappears.

You save specific messages individually, but this again alerts the sender, who can then choose to unkeep it.

To be clear I'm not talking about pics that can only be opened once, those still vanish after viewing. The time bound disappearing chat can absolutely be preserved by the recipient.  You switch it off on your side after the conversation begins. If you delete the convo entirely and then start a new one with that person still using expiry feature then you have to switch it off for your record again. I only delete a convo entirely if I have no intention of seeing the sp again, so I don't need to keep disabling the feature if i have further contact with that number/sp.

Switching it off after the convo starts does preserve everything sent from that point on, so yeah, a time bound chat can absolutely be kept.

Only thing is it's not really a "your side" toggle. In a one to one chat the setting's shared, so when you turn it off it goes off for both of you and they get a little notification saying so. So it works, but they will see you've done it rather than it being private to your copies.

And anything already sent while the timer was running still vanishes, so switching off only saves stuff from that moment onward, not what came before.

I absolutely agree with this Emma, if we can no longer see a number I'm out if WhatsApp, its already a pain as WhatsApp doesn't work with CE so I have to copy and paste the number to the search on CE manually, if we no longer have numbers to check then I won't be using it and they will have to text.

Its doubly annoying as WhatsApp status updates are an occasional method I use for on the day availability and its quite successful

Could you not just make it a condition that numbers are shown, and any usernames are auto-blocked? I guess it does increase the admin, so easier to just use text. But given I do utilise the WhatsApp status updates as well, as SPs post their immediate availability, it would be a shame to lose that option.

I think if I end up keeping it then I will request a number to be sent in the first message and I will have to text them to verify that it is their number and not just some random number they sent to get round the issue  :dash:
