Been on the news today about some sort of agreement to make sure AI doesn't get out of control and all these top people have decided that they will "Self police and regulate" it, copied from a BBC article -

But on Tuesday, after hosting a meeting with bosses from technology firms OpenAI, Anthropic, Nvidia, SpaceX, Meta and Google, Trump said executives had signed a "morally binding" document that would serve as a "form of protection" from AI's potential risks

So like as if any of these fuckers actually has any morals  :unknown:

Furthermore self policing and regulation basically doesn't work as individually they all carry on developing as fast as they can while hoping that others are backing off and being slowed down but deep down knowing they aren't.
Financial markets here in the UK and elsewhere were "Self regulating" but all that happens is you get a load of young city boys looking to make a quick short term profit and they crashed the market

Self regulation  :sarcastic:

I had it in my industry back in the 90's. An MP got the government to intervene via the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) and the Monopolies and Mergers Commission.

A few things were brought in to placate the regulator, and on the surface it all looked like people were playing nice.

But in reality the bad actors carried on as normal. In fact I would say it got worse, because the bad actors were more aware of what they could and couldn't get away with, so they just didn't cross that line.

You guys need to stop talking about artificial intelligence. The official term is now Super Intelligence because, apparently, that sounds better and more convincing

Just wait until quantum computing becomes commercially viable

An opinion piece by Cindy Yu in today’s Times includes this:

An estimated 160 to 200 million people worldwide use purpose-designed AI companion apps, including up to 70 million in China. Others have fallen in love with generic large language models, like ChatGPT: 8 per cent of American internet users consider AI a friend.

In China, the popularity of human-AI relationships has led the government to legislate against AI companions, a world first. The new regulations ban companies from offering anthropomorphised services to under-18s and instruct them to frequently remind users that they are interacting with AI. Similar legislation is being drafted by the EU, and looser restrictions already exist in New York and California.

That sentiment is not restricted to the advent of ai, scholars have said as much for centuries.

There is a movie coming out about Open AI starring Andrew Garfield. It’s getting rave reviews at New York & London Film Festivals - I’m definitely intrigued in it.
