The thing that most of these conspiracy theories / theorists seem to do is to pick up on 1 single or specific thing that's perhaps unclear or hard to explain rationally (until a proper scientific reason is given but by then they are too far down the rabbit hole to get back out) but they then reconstruct every other piece of fact and information to fit in with their warped view and theory.
Effectively they try to reshape the entire world to fit in with their 1 theory or opinion
That's it in a nutshell.
It’s the selectivity. It’s the absolute refusal to consider evidence that contradicts, or to follow the principle that, as John Maynard Keynes probably never said, “When the facts change, I change my mind.”
Whenever I unearth an intriguing possible fact, I investigate thoroughly. That doesn’t make me special or clever. In the age of the internet, it’s easy. We’re very lucky. And it is – surely? – the obvious think to do when presented with surprising information.
But conspiracy theorists don’t do it. Their minds are closed.
Anyway, an update from the world of unreason.
Yesterday my conspiracy theorist friend (CTF) told me that the “next big thing” is going to be a world-wide panic about aliens. This will be caused by the full facts about alien activity on Earth being released in order to distract attention from the Epstein files.
I should stress, to any who might suspect that he sounds certifiable, that my CTF is a successful and entirely “normal” man who earns a good living in a demanding profession.
Anyway, aliens. My CTF offered the usual stuff, much of which involves Peru, for some reason. (Why do so many aliens visit Peru? What’s wrong with Wigan?)
Scientists have explained / debunked / rebutted all this, but conspiracy theorists never want to take the further step of seeing their beliefs challenged. In any case, the said scientists are – of course – all working for the Deep State.
After our conversation I sent my friend this link, saying that, if he wanted to “take a brief trip into the realms of rationality (not, I know, territory where you are ever truly comfortable)”, he might like to read the article:

So, no, I’m not in the least worried about the possibility of encountering aliens on Southsea sea-front or in Leigh Park shopping centre.
But the fact that, according to a YouGov poll last year, 47% of Americans
believe that aliens have definitely or probably visited Earth at some point?
Now that is absolutely fucking terrifying.
(Almost as disturbing, incidentally, is the fact that, by comparison, only 22% of Americans believe in the Loch Ness monster, which certainly does exist. I’ve seen the evidence.)
