I was driving along the Embankment last night and spotted a car coming in the opposite direction going quite slow, with no lights on - nothing at all.

I could see a turret on top of the roof and other modifications to the bodywork. There were two people sitting in the front seats.

As it got closer I could see it was a Waymo Robotaxi.

They were testing some differnet ones in docklands / Canary Wharf area a few weeks back. I rode in a tesla that was auto but with a driver around a simple circuit. I doubt if an auto taxi that can take me from some random place to a SP down a dirt track ever in the near future. Maybe point to point in cities.

Seen these in San Francisco. Heavily used there. Never used them myself. Understandably taxi drivers there hate them as they’re losing business. The sensors are very sensitive and so pranksters there would simply put cones in front and back of them and they wouldn’t move at all.

I used these a fair amount in Phoenix when I used to fly there on a regular basis.

The first couple of rides is quite bewildering & unnerving but in the USA, the N.S.E.W grid system certainly helps these cars to perform well.
I suspect it's much more of a challenge on the UK's narrow, twisting roads

Had a driverless taxi in Boston (USA).......... think it works over there because its all straight lines & blocks.

Can`t see one coping as well as the Uber driver last weekend when we were at the RAH for a show and then the Iranians started protesting creating localised gridlock.

Uber chap was on point except when we nearly got cleaned out by some Iranians in a Merc waving flags that blocked the drivers vision.
