A rather bizarre experience this week in my regular Thai parlour. In the relaxed, post-orgasmic (mine not hers) wind down we were chatting about holiday destinations in Asia and I mentioned that I had had a very enjoyable visit to Cambodia. Cue my normally sweet, good-natured masseuse going off on a 5 minute effing and blinding rant about the "********** Cambodians".
Note to self: Don't stray onto geo-political topics when you're there for a massage and HE.

You only said, "you had a nice holiday in Cambodia".

No mention of politics.

Good point though, not something you hear lots about in the media. Clearly emotive for them though

The American punk band Dead Kennedys recorded a song called 'Holiday in Cambodia ' ,meant ironically given the massacres there under the Pol Pot regime.

Hilarious   At least you weren't daft enough to bring it up during hand relief which might have resulted in a very unhappy ending!

Might try doing this when my Thai friend comes back..... making sure,of course, that she's nowhere near Dick and the twins.

I've had a nunber of thai friends, and some thai people look down on, or strongly dislike, China, Myanmar and Cambodia and the people from those countries. Whilst a lot of thais are very nice there is also a very strong streak of nationalism amogst some of them.

Problem at the moment is there's an undeclared war on the border between Cambodia and Thailand, seemingly partly caused by historic refugees from Cambodia squatting on land that isn't theirs.....
Spoke to a local Thai girl in the week before Christmas and she was worried sick about her parents, who lived on the border and she'd not heard from for a couple of weeks. According to her, at the time the Thai authorities reckoned about half a million Thais had been recently moved away from the border area. I've no idea how things have progressed since then. The western press seems to say very little about it.

There has been some friction between Cambodia and Thailand over border dispute, this has been flaring up on and off for a few years with some fighting between the two . They have recently signed a peace agreement but I wouldn't bet on it lasting long. The Thai's don't like Cambodians

there was a few months back, then it flared up again a couple of weeks before xmas, seemingly more intense.
There may have been changes since that I don't know about - it's not something I've noticed
