Author Topic: Ok stupid question but I'm new - how do I like a post?  (Read 2251 times)

Offline Fush

The question is in the title really...I've come across a few posts which have offered good advice. I see under their profile picture they have 'likes' but how do I like a post? I'm looking at it and can't for the life of me find where to click  :dash:!

The green circle with a thumbs up in it just below the 'likes'.

You've screenshotted my name and I haven't got one, like you haven't got one, you can't like yourself only other people.

Thanks daviemac, although while I know what it looks like now, I don't see it on anyones profiles. Perhaps because I'm a new member and need a certain number of posts?

Not sure why you can't see it mate.   :unknown:

Can you take a screenshot of the name on a post you want to like?

It doesn't matter, the person 'liked' doesn't know who 'liked' them or what post was 'liked', all you know is the total.

I know that you can't like yourself, and you can't find out who liked you or your post. However as you see in the screenshot, I picked a random thread with different people in it and none of them have the green arrow/tick. I'm using firefox - I did try Microsoft Edge (my only other browser) and this was the same. It's odd.

He must be, as avatars are not visible otherwise? Odd one?

Looks to me that you're not logged in on the browser that you copied the screen dump from.
Did you have two browsers open: logged in on one, not on the other?

I’m seriously pissed off as I’m not on that list.

If it is any consolation you couldn't possibly be on it, as it is a very old thread and you were not a member back then  ;)

If we dont know who liked us, or which post, .... why is it there??

As with everything on UKP, the owner wished it to be activated.

The software does not allow 'likes' to be linked to individual posts. The software does have a 'Karma' function which allows both likes and dislikes recorded against the individual account. The negative aspect is not enabled  :hi:

Ah I see.
Thank you for the info  :)

I think the intention is to encourage the recognition of consistent good reviewers or people who otherwise contribute, rather than individual posts. I like the anonymity as it encourages impartiality rather than cronyism or "I scratch your back, you scratch mine".

I was once a member of the forum of a print magazine. Not only were Likes awarded on a per-post basis, but a "forum post of the month" would also be featured in the print magazine. The result, predictably, was that forumites would post in soundbites in an attempt to be noticed. It was pretty excrutiating, in hindsight.

That has happened in the past as well.....especially when OldAdmin tried to be too clever, but that was many years ago.

Go to your (or whoever's) profile summary page.
Click on "Show posts"
go to the list of messages, and go to the page with the oldest messages - you'll see each message is sequentially numbered, the oldest gives you the number of posts

Just to conclude this thread - now I've pasted a review, and my post count is now '1' (even though I've posted in another forums), I now see the like button! Guess it doesn't appear before making a review or your first post. Problem solved  :)
